I am getting one Thursday at basspro for $50. I dont know anything about them but the price sure sounds good. I have been wondering which ones everyone reccomends also.
hmm.. $50 bucks for unit. hmm...
Question what will you use it for? & how often?
Second. MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A WAYPOINT OF Starting point (car, House, Cabin ).. We get more calls from folks lost, with GPS units. Not knowing how to use them, or make starting way point.
They are a tool, depends on how big of a job you want to work with Will demand the correct tool.. If that makes sense?.
I'am the one teaching my Searchers on GPS & how to get back to the coffee house. :-) Feel free to ask.
I use mine Garmin 60cx, for every time I am in the woods or driving into the city junlge. I love it.

Reason: hope this sends okay, in the new Green screen
I have the new Garmin 60csx and it works great. It will also do auto-routing, moon phases, altimeter, electronic compass etc. The downside side is if you want detailed maps you have to spend extra money for mapping software. I did buy the North America navigator map and Bluewater Chart for fishing the coast. It is waterproof and even picksup a signal inside my office in downtown Austin. I did a lot of research before buying and glad I got this unit. It is not cheap but it does everything you want.
The Garmin Vista unit is a very good one. Like Chug said it all depends on what you want to to with the unit. Myself I wanted the capability to download maps onto it. Normally with the cheaper $100 GPS you can not download anything onto it.
I always thought Garmin was the name, however I just picked up a Magellan Explorist 600. I liked the fact that it uses SD cards for memory. I have loaded all of Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma Topo 3D maps and also most of Texas Direct Route. The mapping feature is great! I am going to load Direct Route for Maryland as I have to go to Baltimore on business the end of the month. That will be a test to see if I can find my way around that mess. The 600 started out around $400 to $500 at one time. Academy marked them down to 259.99 and I jumped on it. I intend to use it primarily for hunting/fishing but the Direct Route is nice also (a good selling point to the wife). Just as AggieTex said, it all depends on what you want to use it for. I have a Garmin GPS 12 that will allow you to mark a spot and you can go to it. Matter of fact I loaded the coordinates for my deer lease and stands that I saved with the Garmin into the Magellan. Opening morning I walked too far in the dark and missed my turn off to the stand I was hunting. I turned on the Magellan and walked straight to the stand using the coordinates I loaded from the Garmin! All this being said, I learned that Garmin has better customer service and they do updates to software/maps more often. As far as function in what I use them for...they both will do what I want to do. Good luck on making your decision!
That is probably the Garmin ETrex or the Magellan Explorist 100 which will just allow you to mark points. The base map on the unit is not very good and you can not download other maps onto it.
I have a Garmin eTrex Vista C that I like but I am going to buy a Garmin eTrex on thursday at BPS because they are so cheap It has to be good for something.
