When I needed mine replaced I priced all the materials and than got three quotes. I hired mine out becuase their wasn't enough savings for DIY.

If you use regular pine or treated for the poles, yes they will rot or get termites, but cedar or redwood are rot, decay and termite resistant. I would recommend metal poles, metal gate frames and a cedar board on board privacy. Go with 1x4's on 1x4's or 1x6's on 1x6's rather than 1x4's or 1x6's with 1x2's for the privacy strip. The 1x2's have a tendnecy to twist and split. I too have a 7' privacy board on board 1x6 fence that I hired to have done because the cost of me buying materials and doing it myself was not worth my time and trouble for the difference and I do construction as a business, decks, arbors and such but no fences.

I would say use metal if you plan to stay where you are for a good while otherwise I wouldn't go to the expense.

We are paying (homebuilder price) right at $10 a running foot for a two rail, 6 ft dog eared cedar picket fence right now.
