Will shredding get rid of my cactus?

After I burn the heck out of them with a pear burner? I have read that they regrow from the spines on the pad so i figure to burn them off and then shred them. They have no fruit on them right now so there shouldnt be any seeds able to re sprout. I have finally removed all 5000 mesquite trees one by one and killing with diesel and Remedy and now its time to remove the cactus. I know that some will regrow but I plan on killing them with poison when I start seeing new growth. Thanks

Deer use cactus as a source for water. This on your lease or home?

This is an old hayfield I am working on restoring. I cant leave it for deer and I dont have any cows to put out there to eat it. It also has about a half mile of river so nothing will be needing them for water.

Cool. Have no idea about the shredding.. roll chopping at the ranch clears them for a short time..but they always seem to find a way back..

Hatfield is right. They will spread if you shred!

I've shred them with mixed results. Remedy and diesel will kill them.

Make sure you burn them crispy, if you dont, and they are still alive. You will spread them out, each pad can form its own cactus. Before you know it your hole pasture will be covered in cactus. You need to spray them or burn them to a crisp. You should also consult the NRCS they will help in some areas with the cost to spray them, or give you money to do it yourself.

Deer only use this as an emergency source of forage and water. If you dont need them for the quail or anything else then they are just taking up surface area for good forage sources.

From my experience: shredding will spread them. BUT, if you continue to mow or otherwise cultivate the field, you'll be OK. Unlike hackberry trees, etc., cactus need to be left alone to prosper. My elderly neighbor warned me about shredding cactus when we first bought our property. We have really poor/shallow soil and by mowing the area a couple of times/year, the cactus have all but vanished. Perhaps if I left it alone for a few years I'd be covered up with cactus, but right now I'm winning.

Shreading will spread them big time.

Schredding will only spread it, so will roller chopping it. To kill it you have to spray it with the herbicide Surmount, the ingredient in this product that kills pricklypear and
other cacti is picloram. Just FYI
