It took me 8 years of hunting on my own with a bow on public land in Colorado to shoot my first elk. It is an adventure every time.
Now that you are going, get in shape. You don't need to lift weights, you need to run and climb stairs. The only year I have been in really good shape up there, I would ride my mountain bike as hard as I could every day for about an hour. Other years I tried running and the eleptical, but they weren't as good.

If the fee comes with private land or access to landlocked public with the cabin, I would say do it.If it doesnt, save the extra $1k just get a good tent and camp for free as there is a gazillion places to hunt and camp in that area.....I know, I only live 30 minutes away.
