    Building a coffee table

Wife wants a new coffee table as the modern steel/glass doesn't match the house at all. So I am looking to build one. I've done some light wood work but not sure if this is a project I should even attempt.

Something along the lines of .

I can borrow large cabinet clamps from my dad to do the top. Do you have to biscuit the top slats or can you get away just gluing them and attaching to the base. Also, for legs can you get something premaid from lowes etc or is that a custom order type deal?

Am I wasting time effort and energy or is it possible with the right tools to make it happen. Don't want to build something ghetto and have it be the first thing people see when they walk into our house.

Will go into DIY section if I start the build.

You could drill pocket holes underneath and hide your screws. Try tablelegs.com for the legs, but don't be surprised when you see some of the prices I don't think the legs you'll need will be to bad, but I looked at some for a tall table that were a lot more than I expected.

I think Kramer had a great idea on coffee tables.

The top is gonna be hard without a joiner. You can get away without a surface planer by just sanding the crap out of it. You could drill and dowel to get past not having biscuit joiner. Just have to make sure you have a drill press and all holes line up real good.

Can you weld? Wooden tops and metal legs look great. Go to my web site and look at some of the tables I've built and get some ideas. If you decide to go that route just PM me and I'll explain how. The site is http://dracometalworks.com/
