    Holepuncher ,

I politely disagree . I prefer a double lung shot on a deer . I used to try for the heart only and still occasionally shoot one there just for grins. For whitetail if you put it low in the lungs just above the heart it wipes them out quick ! I have had deer I shot through the heart run over 100 yards . I have only killed 51 whitetail with a bow so far but have blood trailed 100's .

Now if you are talking hogs Heart shot is preferred . Deer I like double lung .

    SticmemXT,

As far as not finding the deer .... Many times we think we hit the boiler room when in reality we hit a little high or a little far back . If you put a sharp Muzzy through both lung there is a dead deer at the end of the blood trail . After bowhunting 26 years I can not tell you how many times I have found a deer bow shot for someone ans they swore they hit them better than they did . Don't let it get you down . I assure you anyone surfing this website that has killed many animals with a bow has lost some type of animal with their rig . It happens with a gun too . Some will argue " I ain't never lost an animal and ain't never missed neither " . My reply to that is " Well then you have not been bowhunting long " . We bowhunters all owe it to the game we peruse to practice , execute the shot , and follow up on the recovery . Sounds like you made a good effort to recover your deer . One gentleman said " he may show up on your game camera soon " . He is dead on right . That deer you shot most likely is still running around . Don't let it get you down . Obviously you are a good hunter and will learn from this experience . Keep plugging at it man .

    Tuthdoc ,

I do prefer to shoot my bucks through the shoulder . However I do shoot heavy shafts tipped with cut on contact head that devastate the shoulder . I realize that shot isn't for everyone . Most set ups that are tuned well will blow through both shoulders with fixed heads Year after year I prove this shot is effective . I realize you like open on impact . They do a fine job as many here have proven . A nasty sharp open on impact placed properly will wipe a deer out super fast . Not taking that away from you . You consistently slay deer , hogs , and all other critters with your set up .

Here is a link to last three years were I shot bucks through both shoulders . Very quick recovery . Taking out both shoulders and lungs is like getting shot and hit by car at the same time ... Lets see how far you can run with two broken legs ? For those doubters just click on this link and view last three years of bucks that came home with me .

    Oh Holepuncher ,

This ones for you bud . I shot this doe through the heart just for grins this season .

I will have to disagree with this as well. I can't remember the last deer I shot through the heart and I can vaguely remember the last deer I lost. Heart is a much tougher target than a broad-side double lung shot. I will say I don't like to hit them high. I like at least one hole low in the chest cavity for a better blood trail. If I am hunting from a ground blind, there is a good chance I am gonna have to low holes. An arrow through both lungs will put a deer down quickly 99% of the time.

I have been blessed with two kills this year both Heart shots, one @ 23 yards, the other 20 yards quartering away, Neither went more than 30 yards.
I passed an 8 point this past weekend simply because he wouldn't offer the Heart shot to me. I practice all year long to enhance my shooting just so I don't foul up a shot. When shooting for the heart and lets say you miss judge the distance a little.Distance is farther than you expected, then probably you will miss the deer, or he reacts in that case his first reaction is to drop, at that point the arrow should enter just above the heart in the area where you descibe."Dead deer." Now lets say its closer than you thought, arrow enters alittle above heart and into the area you describe. Again dead deer. But if you are aiming for above the heart and a little to close or a little too far, you get Lungs both if your lucky, one if you are not.As far as putting notches on my bow, who's counting? Thats not why I hunt. Shoot them where you please, thats your choice. Here's a couple back at you BUD!

I've shot several deer in the heart and had more deer run farther with the heart shot. A double lung shot is never more than 60 yards. Most drop inside of 30yards. Thats just my opinion and what my experience is. I shoot Thunderheads and have shot them since the 80's. As long as you put a SHARP broad head in the kill zone you will kill that deer. A true double lung shot is a pass thru that doesn't hang up inside. Those shots will put them down in a very short time.

alwys go for that quartering away shot for the opposite leg if you hit any where near where you were aiming then you should be fine.......
better luck on th next one!!

I will not purposely aim for the heart again. Tried it and lost my deer.

Its been proven that if you double lung, the animal is dead in around 10 seconds it is just a matter of how for can it travel in that 10 seconds.

Nobody will beleive it but and I am still amazed but this season I witnessed a deer that was doublelunged with a slick trick travel over a mile. I really think the lungs just didn't collapse or the 4 little blade never hit anything important.
I've taken lots of animals with muzzys and like them but still think there is a possibility the deer wont die right away with those smaller cut diameters. I promise you if you were using a mech with a 1.5 cut or larger we would be congatulating you on the hunt reports.
                    Sorry for your loss.
