    Feeders in flood zone

I got access to a place this season on the Chambers creek bottom. It floods at least once a year, sometimes more, and I want to leave the feeder out all year because there are a lot of pigs to chase. This season I was lucky and it didn't flood but I imagine it will this spring. I have thought about getting a hand crank winch and mounting it to a tree to elevate the feeder about 10 or so feet. Does anyone have any suggestions on this, and can the winch and cable hold 300# of corn safely? I have always used quadpod type feeders and am not familiar with the winch set-ups.
    Thanks, James

How high does the water get when it does flood?

Problem child here on TBh used to have a winch set up that was no BS 30' up in a pine tree. Winching a full barrel was hell .
Use a quality wench and thick cable and you will be OK, just mount the winch far enough away that if it should come down it doesn't land on you.

If the water only comes up 4-5' you could just hang the feeder from a limb at the right height to load it from an ATV rack.
This will keep the pigs from bumping the legs and keep the timer out of the water.

Don't scrimp on the pulleys or method of attaching pulleys/winch/cable. Most of the crank up feeder problems/failures I've seen deal with pulleys or how they were attached.

        Yep.

We have built four heavy duty feeder/winch/pulley combos the last few years and bought the best parts we could find. See if you can find a winch that has a gearing that will make it easier to raise.

where are you at in navarro, I don't know if you saw what the flood did to navarro mills this summer, but the water got ridiculously high. If you remember last time we had a flood like this (1989?) it flooded again 2 of the next 3 years because the lakes were so full when the spring came around.

Thanks for the help guys, is there a particular brand winch you reccomend?DaveC--There is drift wood in the tree limbs up to about 8' when it flooded last spring, so I am gonna try and get the feeder at least 10' up. The good thing is it goes down quick and doesn't hold water long.
boss bowman-- the place is about 2 miles (as a crow flies) of R/C reservoir and yeah I remember the flood pf 89 & the one in October of 96. That was the best year I had duck hunting Navarro Mills, everything was flooded and a lot of birds.

I bet thats a pretty good area, I know the richland creek WMA deer herd is in good shape. Seeing lots of waterfowl around navarro mills and little to no deer or hogs.

Bowrian--Eddie & James are my Mom's cousins so I guess they are my 2nd cousins. You know those fellas?
Boss Bowman--I got drawn this year and we saw a few doe and small bucks. Pigs are thick around the Pelham boat ramp area, for us anyway. The bloodweed made the hunting real tough though.

get a brake winch and weld or have someone weld a bracket that will hold it away from the tree to give the crank handle clearence. I use chain welded to mine with a brake over and put one on the top and bottom. I also put a good pulley in the tree- I think mine was $15 at Tractor Supply. If you want pics then hit me and email address and Ill snap a few next weekend when I at the lease. I like having my feeders elevated at least 15 feet to the bottom - deer seem more comfortable and it broadcasts better.
