4wd-High rack!!! Rough(but pretty) country. I hunt closer to Ft. Stockton and love it. We hunt feeders mornings and evenings and glass canyons and ridges during the day. You will love it.

I will agree with Eradicator. Growing up this is how I was taught, and for allot of years I thought it was the only way to hunt!!

Boy have I learned allot since then!

Erad, tell him about the Mule Deer

Erad, Please do. I am more excited about the Mule Deer than anything.

We have a ford half ton 2wd drive swb that I am going to put a top rack on as well as 4 wheelers. I have 4 wheel drive in my truck but I won't be hunting out of it.

Brandon, I hunt that same area. I am about 45 miles SE of Ft. Stockton. It was a banner year for that country, for mule deer and WTs'. The soto plant is great for attracting mulies. Chop it up with a matchete, and they will come to it, more so along the side of a mountain. Numerous game animals in the area, javis, mountain lion, fox, tons of bobcat ect. I would post pics from this year, but they are of rifle kills, not bow kills. The terrain is tough, and a 4 wheel drive is suggested. We use 4 wheelers to get around. I love this part of the country, and I hope you enjoy as much. Best of luck to ya.

They don't have to be bow kills in this forum.

                Post away!

                  WSent,

I'm sorry to say that I'm not able to hunt mulies on my lease there. My father and I have whitetail slots on it and are waiting in line to get muley slots. The guy that got me on the lease shot about a 160"muley(10pt) this year. He arrowed it during bow season and hit high. He showed up on the cam 3 days later at the same feeder. He was able to shoot him the last day of rifle season. CrookedArrow, which ranch do you hunt? That's almost exactly where I hunt. Even if I never get a mule deer slot on this ranch, I will never give it up. It's worth it to have 11,000 acres to yourself and to see the stars, etc. I've never hunted the high country, but I'm guessing this is as close as you can get and still be in Texas. By the way, if I used a 2wd I could only hunt maybe 1/10 of the ranch that we're on. Enjoy, you will love it!

Typically, the mule deer rut is after the season, but you might catch the beginning of it the last weekend. The guys that hunt them on our lease use predator calls a lot of times. This works well on the does and younger bucks, but if a big boy is getting started early, she may bring him in tow. We use tripods or ground blinds for bowhunting, as suitable trees are few and far between(and usually not in appropriate spots, anyways). If you have creek drainages, etc. on your place, there may be some larger trees available to hang stands. Hope this helps and aim low. Let me know if you need any specific insight or help. It sounds like there are a few others also that can lead you in the right direction.

Thanks for the info. I haven't been out there yet. Dad says its prett rough, but the ranch has a very good road system. There seems to be several good creek drainages. The ranch has 6.5 miles of the Pecos river. Can someone post a picture of this SOTO plant.

                      Thanks

its hard to bowhunt with anything but a groundblind... rifke huntin is farely easy if you are in shape.. my girlfreinds brother and dad have the ranch right in town (literally.. right behind the football feild and all that somethin like twenty thousand acres or somethin?..leased...i killed a monster 2 curl ram with bow spot and stalk.. they have to spot and stalk mulies..whitetails they put up a feeder in the draw near the top and base of the mountains.. works good but the area overall has way too much huntin pressure and i havent seen many giant deer come from there....your best bet is water and feeder tips like i said.... spot and stalk is easy to find animals.. hard to catch up to them undetected due to rocks and steep terrain
