Seems like things are working for me--lease wise. Two years ago a retired gunsmith buddy asks "My cattle leasing guy asked if I knew anyone to help him with the feral hogs, and I thought of you--are you interested?" Took me all of a nano-second to say yes. This is about 9 miles from the house--and feeder is in place, all I do is bring rifle and ammo, and fill the feeder in the off-season.
About 3-4 months ago, my next door neighbor says "Luther is overrun with feral hogs--you wanna go kill some?" Reluctantly, I considered, as this is only about 4 miles from the house, but I gave in to my baser greed instinct and said yes. Earlier this week I was driving the high fence to check the feeder/trap, and saw a medium-sized boar standing at the tank--in a pose that would have done a FFA show hog proud. However, it was across the fence and I didn't have permission to hunt that place. I asked Luther's son if he knew who owned it and he gave me the guy's name and I called him. I explained who I was and that I was helping Luther with the hog problem and asked if I could hunt his place too--guy said words that are music to my ears--"Heck yes, and kill 'em all." I drove it a bit today and it is thicker than the brush on the S. Tx place I was on a couple of years ago, but with a nearly straight E-W road that I can hit with the road feeder, and then walk from E-W with the prevailing south wind and have some fun.
Today at church, I was talking with a friend who has a place I hunted hogs on for couple of years until they got too scarce to be worth it, and he asked me how many nights I was coming to his place this week since the moon was right--so tomorrow I'm going back to put up a feeder, lights, and build a fence once I re-establish the best place.
Add my bowhunting place on the list, and I now have 5 places to hunt--all within 22 miles, and all it costs me is time, corn money, and a few new feeders. After reading all the "Looking for a lease" posts on the GS, I realize how lucky I am--
So, guess what I'm saying guys, is don't give up--the places are there.
