    Kansas hunting info...

I will be back and forth from Wichita, KS to Pratt, KS for the next year and a half for work so my Texas hunting is pretty much shot. Wondering if any of you guys know anything about the hunting in either of these 2 areas. Hoping to fill my hunting needs while I'm there, just dont know much about the area as far as the hunting goes. Whitetail, mulies, turkey, waterfowl, whatever you may know would be greatly appreciated!!

My hubby, brothers & I hunted unit 15 up (near Kingman/Harper which is unit 16)there season before last. Of the 4 of us we all had shots, 2 connected (3 of 4 were trad hunters too). I passed on a nice young buck the first morning of my hunt thinking that I'd have a better shot at a bigger boy later on....rut set in and it was a tough week of hunting. Last morning I missed a doe at 35 yds. We took ground blinds and our friends who own the property we were hunting also had a few bow blinds. They use a lot of round bales stacked 2 high for stands. Worked well. My brother had a shot at a big bobcat but no tag so no kitty....
It's worth the $465 a tag. Tons of turkeys in that area. We were after whitetail. We thought 50% success rate was pretty good at the time. We hunted one week only though. If you've got the chance to hunt multiple times your odds may be better.

I hunt just northeast of Pratt. Lot of deer that way. Very few public land in that area and what public land there is, it's 99% all CRP with no trees on it. Might be able to find a landowner that will let ya hunt, if everything isn't leased up.

I do NOT know these guys but I do KNOW the area where they guide around...

Our friends wanted us to practice some herd managment. This was my hubby's 2 and a half year old that was over 200#. My brother's doe was slightly smaller.

Go to KDWP and search around for public hunting land. Tons of public land in the area you will be traveling / working. Key is to put in for your deer tag in April and choose a couple units side by side that you fill good about hunting. Open / not leased private land in units 15 and 16 are extremely hard to find.

I do not know any outfitters first hand in those areas and would do a ton of home work on the ones you might use. I know for a fact since the non-resident tags became easy to get, a ton of locals became outfitters over night to make some extra income that know nothing about hunting deer.

            Good luck
