Yes you have to fill out paperwork but no background check. Gun, extra magazine, flashlight, knife= always.

Not going to read all the responses but here's my .02c and not trying to be funny either.

1 A cop is to heavy to carry
2 The police are minutes away when seconds count

I hope I never need mine but if I do I sure would rather it be in my waistband than anywhere else...

That is why I carry. I can as a police officer with very little restrictions that apply to CHL's.

If I never need it (have already used it off duty several times though) or if someone gets the drop on me then that is just the way it is. I don't want, "If I only had my pistol", to be my last thought on this earth.

Back in the early 1980's we had a uniformed officer walk into an armed robbery at a grocery store. A call went out for a robbery that had just happened or was occurring at that time. The officer happened to be right there and went inside, likely thinking that the robber had fled. The only problem was that he had not and was still getting the cash from a register with people still in line checking out.

One of those people in line at the register was one of our off duty officers watching the whole thing go down. He was unarmed. As the on duty officer came through the door, the robber shot him several times. The unarmed off duty officer could do nothing to stop the other officer from being shot or even to save himself if the robber started shooting other people or taking hostages now that he was discovered. Fortunately the suspect fled and the off duty officer took the downed officer's revolver from its holster and shot the suspect as he was fleeing. Also fortunately, the shot officer recover but retired from his injuries.

The bottom line is that I don't want to be that unarmed officer and can't save my own life or that of someone else if the opportunity happens like it did that day. Like I said, if a guy gets the drop on me or shoots me before I can defend myself, I guess it was just my day. I just don't want that last thought to be, "What if....?".

WHY a CHL?...I explained to my brother like this..."Its like having a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, you hope you dont need it, and you probably never will. BUT if you do...its the only thing that will solve your problem.

                  No paranaoia involved...

Thats a good way to explain it. Just to be prepared. Spare tire on your truck even. Never had to use mine, i keep my tires in good shape. So why do I carry one around? The odds of me not needed it are very high. I havent needed it for the last 17 years, because Im not an idiot thats why I carry it around. The consequences of not having a spare tire isnt near as serious as not a pistol.

I live out in the country. If I have on long pants, I'm armed.
It is some where between 45 minutes to 1 hour for the county to drive from town out to my place, so I feel pretty much like I need to be able to take care of my own problems.

                        PS yes my dog bites

It's not paranoia, It's situational awareness. That's what I teach my wife and kids. My daughter is 9 and every time we go get out of the car somewhere she says " look dad, I'm aware of my surroundings" showing me how she is looking around. It's so cute, but it's what everyone should do. Parnell Mcnamara was my CHL instructor and if you didn't want to carry a gun by the time the class was over you didn't have pulse. He told true stories that happened in Waco through out the years. Don't be a victim.

Booger, I am not sure if I get your posts. You wanted to know the reasons for getting a CHL, then asked about Blood alcohol levels. I dont know what they have in common. Also, there are ZERO negatives for getting one. with one you have the option to carry or not, without you dont have that option.

Also, you are NOT liable for it if it is stolen and used in a crime. They first off have no proof that you even owned the gun. Yes if you bought it new and filled out the paperwork it tells them that at one time you owned it, but you could have sold it 10 times over and they would not know.
It would not matter if you had a CHL or not, they could not charge you.

Do you ever get mad while driving and honk your horn at someone? I did. Then I parked my truck and they came back after me. 4 men in a truck and me, a woman. Sometimes trouble finds you - whether you want it to or not.
