    Let's talk sod/turf grass replacement...

    Lost my St. Augustine back yard to a fungus and of course, the horrible drought even after treatment. My front yard was Bermuda although I'm not sure what exact type. I lost a large amount of it as well because of my and my neighbor's large post oak shade trees and little to no sun. After I lost my St.Augustine, I just decided to shut off water last year to the back and what was left of the Bermuda, didn't fare well in the drought but it is still there. So my back yards is a clover fest and my backyard is a mix of thinning bermuda and some weeds.

    My neighbors two big post oaks causing me so much grief on my side kicked the bucket (don't ask) and are no longer there.... so I should be good to go on good sun. Looking to go Bermuda again as I am tired of watering and dealing with the fickle St. Augustine.

    I've been doing a little reading and have come across Bermuda Tif 419 and Celebration 450...and would like to talk more about the preferences of you folks that might have either. I have low traffic, mid to good sun with some shade with post oak trees, depending on the sun's position and sandy loam soil. I live in the DFW area, have an irrigation system and it is HOT..

    First....I haven't bought sod in 13 years....what is the going rate for a pallet of sod and how much does it cover?

    Second....anybody in the DFW area have a preferred seller or have a TBH hookup/Keegal deal?....Hi Keegals

    Third...I am probably going to do the front yard first and I want to toss it myself. I need the exercise plus I have a couple of buddies that want to return the favor on some suspension and injector work I did for them. I'm told that I can scalp my current "weeds" and lightly till up my yard to get a good base. I have some low lying areas i'll probably fill with Dyno dirt or something. Any other recommendations for the prep?

    Thanks fellas

            Mine was great for years and the drought heat of 2005 (or 2006??) knocked mine back and I never was able to get it back to the level it was. Last year's drought helped finish off what I have been needing to do for a couple of years. I'm ready to get it back to where it was.

              Pallet = 450 sq ft
              Spray round up, kill weeds and then till up the yard.
              If you get pallets from a landscaper...prolly run 90-100 per delivered. If you can find someone to haul them from the grass farms, you can get them for $45 per plus freight. These were prices 3 years ago, may have changed some.

                Smart, I have Celebration bermuda. It is an excellent turf grass that loves the sun. I live in west texas, and the drought has affected us badly too. Anyway, the prices around here are: Celebration Hybrid Bermuda 1/2 Pallet 225 Sq. Ft. $165 Full Pallet 450 Sq. Ft. $305. I paid cash and got it for $250/pallet. I enjoy a nice lawn, and mow 2-3 times a week. I know, kinda crazy to some people. It is very dense/thick and dark green. It doesn't take a ton of water, and I mow with a rotary mower and a reel. It will get very thick and you'll have the lawn looking like a golf green in no time. I'll see if I can dig up some pictures to send you. Here is more info on the grass; http://www.celebrationturf.com/

                    TT turffalo...

                    Texas Tech version of Buffalo.

                    419 tif is my favorite, but I'm growing fond of the buffalo turf grass.

                      I have a 1 ton and a 16 foot tandem so that sounds like a great plan...

                        Stay away from Texturf 10 bermuda. You can fertilize and water all you want but it will never look the way you want it to.

                          Whitetailslayer and I plugged my yard in Lubbock with turffalo. It was a nightmare. At the time they didn't sell sod, just plugs of it. It was drought resistant, and didn't have to mow all that often, but did not make for a pretty lawn. Just my .02

                            Emerald zoysia, the stuff golf courses use for the greens. Drought, disease and insect tolerant.
