Always interesting to read these threads. I know we held flat during the entire covid years to help our customers.Once we updated our prices "slowly" we caught heck from those same customers we tried to help out during the pandemic. For us that will not be the case this time. As the OP noted we are getting those same type of emails and letters from our vendors. Do I agree there are inequities in the current trade agreements.....YES. Do I agree with the way we are going about "balancing" the trade concerns..........NOPE! From a pure historical macro-economics view I do not see it working out as stated, but I will be happy to be proven wrong.

But, international monetary economics have a heck of a track record of saying don't try that.We are just trying to get ahead of the "potential" for COGS getting out of hand. America does have trade issues with a lot of global trading partners but we don't have an issue with ALL of them. Using a scalpel not a axe would have made this much more efficient........ and probably a greater chance of being effective. We are all in this boat, so I can only hope the President is right in his decision concerning global reaction.

Interesting. Did not know about Hoover’s tariffs and their impact on the Great Depression. Plan to do some reading up on it.

No idea why we want to repeat that type of protectionism......but YES some level of protecting may be in order.Last edited by dosrobles; 05-19-2025, 05:06 PM.

What is absolutely true is that you can not rely on people that are trying to kill you! Allowing fentanyl dealers to provide pharmaceuticals is insane just like allowing people who war game you to build critical infrastructure. I wish this had been focused on China and showed more planning. What I pray for and what I’d bet on are two different thingsFree trade was his thing for economic growth and greater international relations. Yep, China is a huuuuge problem (on multiple fronts) and could have easily been the laser focus of tariff concerns without throwing the world into a tizzy (most notable R or D policy wonks agree). After putting them in their place, then take on the next scoundrel.......so forth and so on!
I agree with the Presidents GOALs but the tactics are, well.......strange.

All this talk about the merits of tariffs is completely irrelevant, Trump is just using some strong arm negotiation tactics he's not mindlessly slapping tariffs on stuff and hoping the tariffs themselves help anything. They're largely gonna be temporary. Relax and let the bully negotiate for us.
