Probably discussed before- buzzards in box stand

I had a guy on my lease that never got a chance to hunt this past season. I generally stay out of my lease guys areas unless they ask me to go check on something for them. I found out that he was not going to be able to return this next season so I went to see what might be needed done- there was a box stand in the area when he got the spot so I went to check what needed to be done. I noticed a piece of the corrugated roof had blown off so I knew the inside would need attention. This stand is elevated about 4 feet so I just opened the door and stuck my head in...got the crap scared out of me- baby buzzard in the stand. I have heard all the stories about once a buzzard has been in one you might as well burn it and start over. This place is very difficult to get to with a motorized vehicle, so dragging new build material would be very difficult. I am thinking once I can get in it, drag the old carpet out, spray several times with bleach water, maybe a couple coats of Kilz inside, and then a couple of coats of paint. Anyone had any luck "rehabilitating" a stand a buzzard has been in or is this just going to be a fools errand.

I'm unsure about that. But I know I have used sealer on house walls where the owners were super heavy smokers, and the sealer did the job. I can't imagine it wouldn't work on bird stink.

If you have a spot open on your lease, let me know. I'd be interested in something closer to Nac.

We had one with owls. No talk about rebuilding it. We knocked it down and broke it apart. Over the next year we ran it through the camp fire...

I’ve cleaned and rehabbed owl blinds before and after reading how absolutely disgusting it truly is I’d rebuild.

I may die earlier from some owl transmitted disease 🙃🙃

I’ve had owls and buzzards in my stands. They sure make a mess of them. They can be cleaned up and hunted out of again. Just know those birds will try their best to use it again next time.

No buzzards, but had owls back when our stands had no closing windows. What a mess! Cleaned it out and put up chicken wire in the off season to keep them out.

We had a buzzard nest built in a box stand and hatched its young. We cleaned it out best we could including bringing a vat of water and pump with hose. After first hunt a few months later after leaving open after cleaning it was drug to a hole and burned. Buddy left after sitting in it about 15 minutes said it was horrible smelling and had to go.

Attach some ply over the outside of the windows, with hinges on one side so the ply swings sideways. Paint the outside of the ply black. And inside of the ply same as the outside of the blind. That will keep the birds out, if you fix the roof too.

You haven't lived until you open the door on an elevated blind & have an owl go crashing by in the dark.

Same here...we would rebuild knowing what we now know.

Try that ten feet in the air. I was younger and much, much more nimble. It’s a dang wonder I didn’t fall and break something important to my well being ! Dang ringtailed cats almost made me fall out of one too.

I had owls two years in a row in one blind. No windows. The next year after finding them the first time my son and I went to the lease just to put windows in all the blinds. When we discovered the blind had baby owls in it we scared up some scrap lumber and built them a box under the blinds. I donned some welding gloves and moved the little ugly mothers downstairs and cleaned out the blind before installing the windows. Evidently she raised them because there was owl poop six inches deep in their little apartment. I knocked it off and threw it in the dump area after they were gone.

And……ain’t nothing uglier than a baby owl except a baby buzzard.

Walked into a ground blind one time. There was a skunk sleeping in the corner. Kinda startled me . Spent the rest of that morning trying to shake him out of there without stinking the place up. It finally left about mid-morning after I gave up.

yep, been on here a few times over the years. Most tear them down or just abandon as the buzzards tend to come back every year.
