    Central AC question

Something a little different. It's cooling fine and running, but I just noticed while sitting outside the outside unit runs for about 60 seconds and turns off, keeps cycling on and off like that. I went and checked inside and thermostat is still on cold. Air is blowing cold and temp is being maintained where I have it set at 73 degrees. Something's not right though with the outdoor unit cycling constantly. This something y'all seen before?

yeah that very likely indicates a problem, like a pressure switch or something. I'd have it checked out before any further damage gets done.

Definitely get it checked out. I believe the technical term is short cycling.

Thanks yall. I got a service call scheduled for Monday evening. Is this something that should be considered more urgent? Outdoor unit seems to be staying on now but it's really loud? I've dealt with a lot of AC stuff but not this particular issue.

If it were mine it would be immediate based on what you opened with. Making loud noise, I wouldn't run it.

Probably a pressure switch like others have said. If the compressor is louder than normal it is probably due to cycling back on under high pressure and you have damaged the compressor already. Prepare to replace. You are probably running r410 and if so, I would highly recommend pulling the trigger on a new condenser now while you can still get one with r410 refrigerant. You will be good for the next 12-15 years if you do. New refrigerant out now R454b and all units mfg after jan 1 this year must be r454b which is a propane blend and is flammable.

Yikes, don't want either of those. Super appreciate the info!

I'll call around tomorrow and see if I can find somebody available before Monday.

Electric meter should be spinning too every time it clicks on

If you are afraid of the flammable refrigerant, you may not want to use the a/c in your car. The auto folks have been using flamable refrigerant for years. After talking with a few experts on the matter and doing some research, I opt for using it when one of my units goes down for the count. I'm not worried about it blowing up and burning the house down as there are safeguards built into the systems along with the low amount of it used doesn't calculate out to being enough to cause an explosion. Then there is the consideration of being able to find older refrigerants when your system is low enough to need a little to be able to run but the tech can't get it because it has been out of production for several years. I ran into that last year on one of my rentals. We ended up using refrigerant from four bottles that were nearly empty in order to have enough to charge the system. Good luck on the repair. I hope that the compressor isn't damaged. It may be as simple as a bad run capacitor causing the noise.

Not true. The refrigerant you are referring to is r22 and it is still very much available. They were blowing smoke or didn’t want to go get it. True, it is no longer in production but is still available. And not a scared thing with the nee refrigerant, but it will actually cost much more to replace than just replacing the condenser only now while the 410 systems are still available.
