The new refrigerant has run up the cost. Im not an hvac guy but I am a custom builder. I just put new Daikin units in my house and so far I've been very pleased. I also put in heat pumps. My highest bill this winter was $330. I also foamed my house. My sister has a very similar sized house. No foam, no heat pump, and not sure of brand. Their highest bill this winter was $1100.

That tells absolutely nothing about the units. The foam cancels out your comparison.

Thanks for the feedback guys. We have a crew showing up this morning to install a 15seer single-stage system for $10,800.

I called the wrong company on the first call and they are who gave us the high bids. The folks that have been doing our AC work for 10+ years came out yesterday morning and that is who we are going with.

I know everyone has an opinion on this but I asked the owner of the company what he recommended and he said the 15seer single-stage. He said the energy savings has more to do with the insulation in the house and that the dual-speed/variable speed units have more problems down the road because of the additional technology.

Made my decision easier and I appreciated his honesty.

I also asked about the availability of the refrigerant and he said yes it is hard to get but they can get it with a new unit purchase.

Agreed. Just giving some insight. You can't ever compare 2 houses. Way too many variables. However, ask anyone about a a heat pump on an all electric house, and you will then understand my point. My foam doesn't account for a $700 savings alone.

Insulate all you want, you still need efficient equipment. Not necessarily variable speed or 2 speed, but the heat pump will definitely pay for itself in about 3 years time.

Op. You probably made a good choice with a 15 seer as long as you don't stay too long.
