My daughter and I are into foraging for and planting native plant species in pots at our house and the one thing we’re having trouble finding locally is wild plum (Either Chickasaw or Mexican?). If anyone knows where there are some growing wild along a roadside or a park (in Conroe/Montgomery/Bryan/Navasota areas) please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Can't help you with a location but your post brought up some memories. We had a plum thicket below our house about 300 yards and about 1 acre in size. We would ride our horses into that thicket and set and eat plums. We were doing this one morning and my dad was on a pretty high strung bay horse. He was eating plums and spitting them out when that bay backed his ears and dad spit a pit just right to go down his ear. I have never seen a horse do what he did that day as quick as he did. He swapped ends and slung his head and broke into. I never saw my dad get bucked off but I sure believe if we hadn't been bellied up in that thicket that day it would have happened. When he finished up we were short a little bit of plum thicket and I had learned a valuable lesson, don't spit a plum pit in a horses ear.

I have wild plums but it is July and August that they produce. Fruits are mostly seed and about the size of a large cherry. They are pretty sour or sharp flavored. I do use them for things. I put about 20 seeds in pots but none have sprouted. I’ll be happy to pick up some for you when they start dropping. I go to the Conroe area quite often.
