    Mr. Cool mini split

Anyone ever installed a mini split ac ? Looking at videos on YouTube it looks fairly easy for anyone with basic diy skills. I'm going to place one in my new tiny house up at Rayburn. Tell me about your experiences during the instalation process.

Super easy if you’re mechanically inclined. Amazon vac pump and gauges I think the whole set was $100. Let it sit under vac I found a loose connection.

Don’t know about the Mr. Cool ones but I’ve installed 3 of the Mexico knock offs. Pretty much plug and play. Hardest part was hanging the bigger 19k btu one. But two people should be able to do it fine. There’s a valve that needs to open before kicking it on. All the instructions were in Spanish but wiring diagram is numbered and the lines are different sizes so dummy proof.

I put in a MrCool DIY...the DIY ones come pre-charged with refrigerant. Between the instructions and YouTube videos it wasn't difficult. Installation is essentially making a hole in the wall for the lines, hanging the inside unit and connecting the lines.

I bought a plastic base to set the outside unit on to get it level and off the ground. Also put in a dedicated breaker and electrical circuit for it.

Just about all of them come precharged with refrigerant. What’s “nice” about the Mr Cool kits if I remember right is that the lines already have a vacuum pulled and they are sealed. When you tighten down the lines, the seal is punctured so as long as you have no leaks, you release the refrigerant and off to the races.

I tactically acquired a Chigo brand from Afghanistan back in the day. Brought it home, installed and hooked everything up myself. I had a HVAC guy from the neighborhood that did work on the side come and draw a vacuum, double check for leaks, and because this one was previously installed I had to have him charge it with R22. Install itself was super easy.

If it were me, I would not spend the extra on a Mr Cool. I’d get one of the cheaper brands, install it, pull a vacuum and 100% ensure I had no leaks, open the valve and let ‘er rip tater chip. Those Chigo brand ones are nothing expensive and they survived YEARS being neglected in Afghanistan. I’m sure something similar would live a very long life at your house.

I installed a Mr Cool DIY in our home in Montana a bonus room above the garage. I didn’t want a chase on the outside of the house and managed to snake the 2 metal lines through the wall to my shop below, then to the compressor outside. I was lucky I had run 240VAC to the shop (which I don’t need) right where I needed tge 120 box outside.

It was more time consuming with my installation, but straight forward. AC is good, and the heat pump works well keeping the room warm in a Montana winter.

I think I posted on the DIY forum but can’t find it on my phone.
