    Manual Steering Opinion

    How bad is it, specifically on a 1st gen mustang? I have been looking for a 60's muscle car for a while. Found a mustang that hits the price point, and most features I'm looking for. No A/C, drum brakes and manual steering though so I'm a bit torn. I also want Dakota digital gauges, but that's a pure want. Each is $2k give or take to remedy so that would add up quick. If I can leave the manual steering, wait until next winter on the brakes while still driving it until then and install the vintage air system soon this may work.

    Once you're rolling manual steering isn't a problem. It's turning while dead stopped that builds the muscles

      It's not that bad. I've had several in my early years. If all you need is a year's wait, I'd say go for it. And enjoy that ride even more when you get power put in. 🙂

        My first car was a '68 Mustang with manual steering. Car was light enough that effort wasn't an issue. Ford's power steering back then was notoriously numb and lacked feedback anyway. The only concern I'd have is wear on the steering box or linkage on a vehicle of that vintage. If it's tight, no worries.

          I had a '67 Mustang the PS pump went out on. I never found the steering without it to be a problem.

            Thanks all. The full upgrade kit looks to be $1500-2k so not a huge deal if it becomes a pain point down the road. I just know the A/C and disc brakes/dual chamber master cylinder are much higher on the list for me. I may not mind it, I want a car I have to "drive". I wanted another Harley but the danger aspect, plus the fact my wife and daughter can't both go with me is a deal breaker. I totally see how a bike still works for some and certainly don't judge, it just doesn't fit for me. I also want something I can drive and still upgrade/tinker with.

            As a side note, anyone know a good place to rent a car hauler around Houston? The mustang is in San Antonio and I'm headed that way next weekend to see my brother anyway. I don't want to jump on I10 in a car I don't know.

              My opinion (and only that) is that if you want a 60s Mustang, you need to keep it in stock and drive it like the Ford engineers designed it. Building arm strength when parking it and longer braking distances with drums vs. discs are part of the car.

              A friend of our son's from high school (rich, spoiled guy) years ago got a Pontiac Judge and proceeded to make all kinds of changes and upgrades to it. IMHO, he ruined a classic automobile.

              .....but it's your money and dream to own one. Good luck, and post pictures when you find and buy it!
