We are east of 35 in central Texas. Have bucks year around but a good portion do disappear during the rut. Some are “homers” and stay around. When we first bought the place 25 yrs ago, there were not many deer. Planting food plots year around along with corn and protein over the years has increased the amounts of deer staying on our place throughout the year. Staying out of the bedding areas along with predator/hog control helps a lot too. Low pressure and lots of groceries.Last edited by SCHC; 03-12-2025, 11:06 PM.

Romancing is everywhere. We had does when we bought this place, but several years ago most does disappeared in this part of the county. They have made a very strong return this last year. This last year, bucks were here all year. They would still not be seen for a couple of days at most during the rut but they seemed to show several times a week. I have 3 groups of bucks that stay here most all year. By mid summer they will come out while I’m in the garden or on the porch. That stops in September and they begin their game of hide and seek. Several other bucks came here last year and are staying. 2 old ones and several young guys have stayed. They are grouped up by age. And the young bucks get bullied by the others.
I do have several food plots, feed corn and protein year round. I have a large pond and several year round creeks. I do allow for quite a bit of undergrowth in my trees and they seem to like that. The creek bottoms are untouched and if anything is in there it will be safe. Most more open areas are planted for deer.

I don't mind it when they show in fall but nobody else around that I know of will feed like I will and supply additional mineral and food plots. Luckily the area I am in is super lush flood plain and creek bottoms with some ag cultivation as well. One problem on small properties I have had is letting my doe population get too high. They tend to stay yr round and I don't think the bucks like being around the girl party in the summer.

The other thing is the bucks tend to get away from the does and fawns. I think every one can understand wanting a little peace and quiet. LoL Bulls do the same thing a lot of times once the cows are bred. They will group up and go lay up in the shade and do their own thing once the cows are bred.
It's a catch 22 though like others have said when hunting properties of that size. Like I said in some other posts on protein I have deer on cameras traveling 1-2 miles per day. They are seen chasing does on one property in the am a mile or more away on protein that same evening.
