My college age daughter wants an acoustic guitar. I’m planning to take her to Guitar Center next weekend to buy something. Guitars are not in my wheelhouse. Any greenscreeners familiar with some of the budget guitars on the market? Budget is $200.

In that range look at Yamaha or Takamini. They are built solid, hold a tune good, and sound/play well for the money. I would avoid the pretty exotic woods like the some of the Ibanez. They look nice in a corner but that's about all there good for. I would also get a standard acoustic without the pickups built in. She can always upgrade or add one later if it becomes necessary. For the record I like cheap guitars, I grab my 100 dollar Johnson 75% of the time around the house. It plays great and sounds good enough for me.

I’ve just started learning to play myself. Not sure if you’re interested but my son in law who is teaching me started me out on electric first. He said I would probably pick it up easier and practice more because the strings are easier on your fingers when first starting out. Just throwing it out there.

I started with an Eterna, which is similiar to a Yamaha, but cheaper. If I remember correclty, I got it, a cheap case and something else (cheap) for $170.00 at Sam's about 127 years ago. I still have it on a stand in the living room and it still is easier to play than most others. I did have a professional do a little work to it once, but that was only about $20. Most people either fall in love with playing or they never get past hurt fingertips. Good luck and tell her "welcome to your new addiction!"
