This is true but there is the possibility that you have zero signal on the ground where you stand and the big Yagi antenna up high enough can grab some that's not shown on your phone on the ground. We have that issue at our camp. Our signal is zero mostly and occasionally flickers to one bar out in the common area. It is inconsistent as heck. The yagi is on 16' pole and gathers enough to boost inside and shoot through the wooden door so folks can sit on our front porch when we are asleep inside if they don't have their own booster and need signal. If we are awake we are the community gathering spot so come on in and sit at the DQ tables to use your phone..

But yes like Charlie says ..the antenna has to have signal to boost signal.

Also knowing as close as possible which direction the closest tower to your location is is a real help too in tuning the antenna. The booster's instructions will show you how to put your phone in real signal mode where you can actually use your phone for a signal strength meter and you can really fine tune your antenna IF you have patience. It's latency is pretty bad, but go slow with antenna adjustments (like 1 degree/minute) and you can get the maximum potential out of the location.

What Smart said is also very true... A little elevation can make a world of difference in whether there is signal or not in an area that is on the fringe of range.
