    Water Softener Recommendations

We are getting closer and closer on our house and will need to decide on a water softener system soon. The house is pre-plumbed so no issues there.

I would like the pro's and con's on what you might have.

Depends on where you live? Also local companies can test water and give recommendations.

It is a Rural Water Company, El Oso.

This is what I pulled from there website. We are in Karnes County.
Carrizo Aquifer located in Wilson County and from the Catahoula Aquifer located in Karnes County.

In my past 3 houses I bought one from Lowes and it worked perfect for over 5 years. Once, I bought one of the high dollar ones, and it was not any better than the 3-5 hundred dollar ones.

I installed one (Aquasure) over the summer along with a couple of filters and UV light.

All the El Oso water I have tested has been pretty hard, like 15-25 grains. I would recommend a setup similar to what is posted above. A Big Blue pre-filter, then a traditional salt-type softener. You should also consider, in between the two, a carbon filter to get the chlorine out before it gets to the softener. This will make the water taste better and also protect the resin in the softener. As for the softener, just make sure it is big enough to handle your usage and flow rate. A lot of the box store cabinet models are undersized for the homes they are in with how hard our water is.

Just be glad you have the El Oso water available. I have seen some crazy bad well water in the Kenedy/KC area with all the drilling activity. One customer could even light her kitchen faucet on fire.

I put in a Fleck 5600 analog system back in 2000. Served me well for 20years(probably would have lasted longer . I replaced it with another, same set up. Sold the house.

New house build, bought the same Fleck system. simple, reliable and does it's job. Based on demand. Easy to install and very good product. Oh, and get your water tested for hardness before buying a softer. It matters.
