    Injured from fall

    Guys,

Recently a hunting buddy was climbing into his 7' tripod, 5:30 AM. When he was only about 3-4 feet off the ground the ladder leg came detached as he was reaching to hang his gear. He had climbed this stand 5-6 times in the previous days w/incident. The T-nut was not tight but rusted in place and seemed tight.

Well, it wasn't pretty. Without his hands free to catch him, his head slammed onto the base of the platform, he went to the ground and the stand came down on top of him. Remember, it was still pitch dark. He wasn't sure how bad he was hurt but w/o a mirror and blood streaming into his eyes, he did managed to ride back to my stand and ask "seen anything"? What a comedian.

A trip to the E-room and 5 stitches in the forehead later, he was good to go.

Just be careful and prepared for the unexpected. Not even a safety harness could have kept this from happening, but having free hands could have helped. Who would have thunk it, a little short tripod?

Most stand accidents happen while getting in the stand or trying to get your stuff in the stand. I hope your friend recovers well.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Luckily it wasn't too bad. Bet he uses a pull rope to haul gear up from now on!!!

        Glad your friend is okay.

Not that it would have helped in this situation but this would be a good time to remind everyone to please use a pull rope to bring your gear into the stand and only after you've secured your safety belt.

We install pull ropes on all the stands at the ranch and encourage everyone to use them. Climbing a stand of any kind with a handful of gear is just an invitation for accident.

Another little device that I have found to be very valuable is a gadget called the Huntin' Hoist. I keep it attached to my backpack so it's always handy. Works great.

I hunted tripods almost exclusively for about 20 years. During that time, I've had a few close calls getting in and out of tripods from just having a foot slip off a wrung or whatever. The more "second nature" it gets to climb in and out of a tripod, the more you have to make yourself slow down and take each step very deliberately and carefully. Glad your friend was ultimately ok. I bet he'll be EXTRA careful for a long time!

That is a scary reality especially being so close to the ground. We never think that something like that could happen ( well, I don't think about it,usually) guess I should be more carefull. Best wishes for your friend.

I know of a older bowhunter when fell from the first step of his ladder stand broke his pelvic boen which cut his artery and he died. they though he died of a heart atatck

tree stand tripods & ladders with safety belts can be as dangerous as dating a Cops wife.

Always use a belt, rope, Harness or vest harness(best IMHO) or Somethign to break your fall

1 in 3 hunters will suffer a fall from a stand in their lifetime

                          buckle Up
