Guys,
Recently a hunting buddy was climbing into his 7' tripod, 5:30 AM. When he was only about 3-4 feet off the ground the ladder leg came detached as he was reaching to hang his gear. He had climbed this stand 5-6 times in the previous days w/incident. The T-nut was not tight but rusted in place and seemed tight.
Well, it wasn't pretty. Without his hands free to catch him, his head slammed onto the base of the platform, he went to the ground and the stand came down on top of him. Remember, it was still pitch dark. He wasn't sure how bad he was hurt but w/o a mirror and blood streaming into his eyes, he did managed to ride back to my stand and ask "seen anything"? What a comedian.
A trip to the E-room and 5 stitches in the forehead later, he was good to go.
Just be careful and prepared for the unexpected. Not even a safety harness could have kept this from happening, but having free hands could have helped. Who would have thunk it, a little short tripod?
