The $35 Harbor Freight electric sharpener works reasonably well but you need a table or flat surface to clamp it to.

      This!!
Look on YouTube and find one that really shows you how to do it with a file. I can sharpen a 18 inch chain in about 10 minutes.

Sthil 2-1 and a portable clamp to hold while sharpening.

Another vote here for the Stihl 2-1... I still running the same chain that's been cutting wood for the last 3 yrs, because of this sharpener! We cut live oak every year and 10- minute touch-ups during use and it stays plenty sharp.
I have 2 back-up chains that I carry in my case, along with the sharpener, but I've never had to use them as of yet.

Yeah I screwed mine to a 2'X12"X2". I've used my HF sharpener for about 10 years with no problems or issues

Not trying to hijack this thread, but does anyone have tips or a guide for grinding depth gauges? I have a Neilsen sharpener grinder.

This is important. Make sure you match up the sharpener on the Stihl 2 in 1 with the chain on your saw. Also, keep in mind there are two 3/8 files for Stihl (3/8 Picco for smaller saws/power pruners and regular 3/8 pitch). Unless you’re a commercial logger, the Stihl 2 in 1 and a vise is your best bet. The electric grinders/sharpeners will ruin a chain quick and with the cost of chains, it can get expensive “learning” how to use them.

What he said, plus for a vice, a stump vice is pretty dang handy for in the field touching up chains. It holds my 24" bar saws and even the little 13 and 16 inch bars.
