    Buying Axis deer

Got a call from my best bud the other day, he tells me that he’s buying a 230 acre HF ranch and wants my help figuring out how to buy axis, and maybe red deer, to put on the place.

We’ve got some relatively educated ideas about how to go about managing the place, but I want your opinions and advice as well.

Who are reputable sellers you’d recommend?

Would you hire a biologist to come up with a plan?

Contact the county extension agent for consultation?

Any and all thoughts or advice is welcome!

www.wildlifebuyer.com. Never used them but I follow their auctions that run daily just to get an idea of what things go for. It appears a lot bidders are bidding all the time. Maybe some other members can give some in sight if they are trust worthy, I have always wondered myself.

Axis are easy, but buy a bunch of them because you won’t see them very often!

you’ll find trailer loads of them on several auction sites.

We try not to move them when it’s too hot or get the driver to come in the middle of the night.

we have decided against moving any of the CWD susceptible species onto our place for right now (sika. elk, red deer…)

Of course you can do what you want, but just be aware that there may come a day when the government wants to do what they think is best….

        We use Branyon's Exotics (branyonexotics.com).

Lesson we learned, depending on where you are located, if you bring axis from the hill country area to the ETX they may not live long their hoofs are split from the HC rocky area & ETX is typically wet, they can get an infection from that & kill them. If you have other HF ranches in the general area reach out to them, they may sell so or point you in the right direction.

        Good luck!

I didn't use a biologist or a county extension agent on my place, they won't help. Harper Tx ( RAZ livestock sales Inc.) 830-864-4538 has exotic auctions every month where you can get some good deals of Axis. Depending on how thick your place is, you won't see them everywhere, in fact you might think they have all died. They breed 2 times a year, that's why you see some bucks in velvet while others are hard antler or even shed or just starting to grow. Get 3-4 times as many does as you do bucks to start out.

                Thx Anthony

I have a few traps and after this freezing weather passes, we will Again, pick up trapping Axis and Fallow. Had this post been up last week, and one Trap separated by four or five days I caught 10 Axis including a 31 inch buck and then 12 fallow. If I can help you, call and leave me a message or text me at 713-416-4143

Auction in Harper usually has them. It would help to know where the property is located

Not sure where I would buy them but I know of three crews trapping axis in this area. A buddy who has just a couple of acres close to town had a trapper on him and they trapped dozens of axis right behind his house. Most of the trappers seem to be working west of Menard along the river.

I can get you whatever you need. I wouldn’t buy from wildlife buyer. Animals are very stressed.

Anyone interested in trading partial axis herds to introduce new bloodlines to your property? Swapping axis for axis to help prevent inbreeding

Lots of guys that buy sell trade transport exotics. I buy them for my place all the time. Call or PM if you want any recommendations. TexasWildlifeTA (Aaron) that responded in this thread is a great guy and moves alot of game for me. Just this past year I probably bought 10-15 axis fallow and mouflon from him. He also darted an sold a Zebra from my place for me and transported about 15 WT for me as well. Honest and reputable guy.
