Opinion about pilots on a gas range

OK I built a hunting lodge on our new ranch, we decided on a commercial type kitchen, all the equipment is restaurant grade, we bought a 60 inch gas range, it has 6 burners, 24 inch griddle and two ovens, it has a total of 10 pilots, they are not auto light, in other words they burn 24 - 7 unless you shut them off. The problem with that is now you would have a live burner that will only light if you manually light it, I did the math on how much propane the pilots lights would use a month, if I figured it correctly it is close to 100.00 a month. I am installing a couple of carbon monoxide / harmful gas alarms in the kitchen just in case some one turns a burner on and does not light it, what would you do, keep all pilots lit or just light the burners manually when you need them ? I also thought about installing a gas shut off valve at the stove but that is going to be a little bit of a chore plus it would not eliminate the chance of a burner being turned on by a child or someone just not paying attention.

I would manually light as needed.

      I’d light as needed.

the CO/ harmful gas detector is hood, but if someone turns on a burner without lighting you will smell propane. The alarm would sound if the vent hood is t functioning properly while the stove/oven is lit and producing CO

The hood does not have the gas alarm but I bought two units that plug right into the wall.

$100 a month for pilot lights seems ridiculous to me. I'd light manually no doubt.

Yes I agree, just a little worried about a kid possibly turning the burner on, feel pretty safe since we installing the alarms

You bought a restaurant style oven so live with the pilot lights being on constantly. Dangerous to light them manually. Too easy for someone to turn 1 on and not light it. Then your house lights up.

Wife won big on that one.
Why not just light them when you get there? Assume you’re gas on the HW heaters as well?

We have one at our camp that sounds about the same size. I don't believe we burn nothing like that and we keep ours lit for 4 months. I do have a question though? If you don't light them and leave the gas on propane is still coming out correct

My water heater, in the home I live in, is the only thing that the pilot light runs 24/7. Except, my Dearborn heater pilot light runs during the winter. I shut it off in the warmer months. The pilots on my stove have been shut off for 35 years to save on gas use. It's a bachelor thing, learned from my Grandfather. I light the stove top as needed.

No, I can turn the pilot gas off, then you just light the burner with a lighter.

Then turn the pilot gas off if it worries you. It has always worried me and is the reason I always went electric.

We have one just like you describe in our house. My wife keeps 2 pilots lit and 4 pilots off. There is a little screw you turn to shut the gas off to that burner and neither the pilot or the burner works. If a kid accidentally turns on the knob, no gas comes out. That little screw is also how you adjust your pilot to get a clean, blue flame as well.
