    Residential Propane Service Questions

I recently purchased a house on some acreage outside of city limits. There is no natural gas service that covers that area so I will be looking at getting a propane tank if I want to run a gas stove/cook top. For those that deal with this same thing, what does the initial investment look like? What size tank would I need to get if I am only running an oven/stove/cooktop on it? How often are you having to refill and what does the cost on that look like? It currently has an electric oven and stove top but I am trying to get away from that for a number of reasons.

I lease my 250 gallon tank from my provider. That way, anything goes bad, they fix. Then we are set up on a plan where they keep track of usage and keep full. One time they let it run out. They had to send out a guy at 11 o’clock at night to get us back up. Not sure what we pay since the wife does the bills, but it’s a lot easier not having to keep track of it.

I lease ($75 per year) a 100 gal tank and have a gas stove, tankless water heater, fire place and my Blackstone on the porch. I have to fill up about every 10 months.

Just got a quote to upgrade my Dad's 250 gallon tank to a 500 gallon. $4000.00. He pays $2.70/gallon and tops off fairly often. Big house, 2 water heaters, 2 furnaces, clothes dryer & cooktop.

He must be going to buy the tank!?
Its my understanding if you own the tank you can buy propane from whichever provider you want. If you lease a tank you have to buy the propane from where you lease the tank. Be sure and ask their requirements if leasing a tank.
I lease a 500 gallon tank and have a stove top, on demand hot water heater and a whole house generator. They require a minimum of 300 gallons a year.

I bought a 500 gallon and I believe it was around $7,000 with install, and it is buried in the ground. Initial fuel delivery was around $1,100 --- but they don't fill it all the way up due to expanding gases, I believe.

We pay ~$3/gallon, fill up 2-3 times a year with a 250 gallon tank. Gas stove, Gas heat, Gas water heater. The company has a sensor so when it drops below 40%, it notifies the truck the next time its in the neighborhood. They leave a bill at the door, it's all pretty straight forward.

Fun story. Turns out if you get a gas furnace, you need to get the propane conversion kit for the furnace. We killed a brand new furnace after 28 hours of use because the installer didn't put the conversion in. We got a new one for free thankfully.

We had that happen with a stove. The flames were orange and put soot everywhere. It took us a while to figure it out.

Yes he owns the tank. They keep the house at 74 degrees. I wish they would turn it down a bit.

Lease at least a 250 gallon tank. We have one and our house has a gas stove, gas tankless hot water heater and gas furnace. About 2 fillups per year! 2400+ sq ft, but spray foamed insulated.

That is very efficient. My first on demand water heater with recirculating pump must not have been working properly because prior to having it replace we were burning approximately $150 per month. It only lasted 8 years. This new one doesn’t hardly burn any propane at all and it has a recirculating pump also.

Find a used 250. I can promise you will get upset with the service sooner or later. If you own the tank you can buy from anyone. I find a local independent, he keep us filled up and leaves the receipt on the door.

I own a 250 and I lease another 250. Our lease is only $58 a year so very reasonable. I bought the one tank because it was a great deal and like mavrick said, you can get any supplier to fill it.

Lease is cheap. I pay 175 a year and they quoted me 2100 to buy a 250 gallon. I think I paid $85 an hour for install and materials. Are you going heat pump for heat? If going furnace for heat you may want a 500 gallon.
