replacing natural gas 40 gal tank water heater

Is $500 labor for same day replacement on Sunday fair. Unit is in the garage. I believe he mentioned changing the copper pipe that feeds water to and from the unit to pex as part of the install. Thanks.

I've probably replaced 6 in my lifetime. Nothing difficult about it. I personally would not pay anyone to replace one. Why replace copper line unless it's bad.

I wouldn't pay someone to do that.

Not for me, they're too easy to DIY. Take a picture before you demo and put it back the same way. Take the gas fitting off of the old water heater because the new one won't come with it. Use yellow tape on the fitting to the valve but nothing on the gas hose to the fitting. Copper lines should be good.

I was just unsure of what possible unforeseen issues that I could possibly encounter. It generally just looks like it would mostly be turning a wrench to replace. I just know things can go south and was tempted to get a plumber but y'all got me thinking about saving $500. I need to cut up a deer today to so.....I may still pay someone.

They'll mark up the water heater also unless you're providing it.

He's OK with me providing. If I could find a new one that matches up exactly to the current one I feel I may attempt but don't want to start messing with sweating pipe, etc.

This...Just do it yourself and save the $500. It's a 2-beer job at the most.

Sounds reasonable for Sunday call getting someone else to install it. If you can afford it and want someone else to do it go for it. I use to be a dyi guys on everything, but not so much any longer.

I think you're talking about the two flex lines that connect to the water heater. Yes, I always go back with new stuff. It's cheap enough and more often than not, one may not seat just right and I'm replacing it anyhoo. I've had the worse luck with those fancy braided ones as well. Plumber told me he hates em and to use the basic copper ones.

If in attic yes, garage probably not it is a pretty straight forward job.

My only thing is I cannot find one this short. The one I ended up getting is almost 62" with the original being almost 57". Unless I shorten the base I am pretty sure I will have to be sweating copper or
                          maybe using sharkbite.

Are these reverse threaded? Don't think so but scared to use more force.
