Vortex Optics guys, need a suggestion

How do the Diamondbacks compare, clarity wise, to the Vipers?

I'm a huge fan of Vortex Optics, not only for the quality of their products, but their customer service too. I have the biggest Viper they offer on my .308 and I LOVE it, everyone who has looked through it loves it as well. A couple weeks ago, down at Thompson Temple's, I was sitting in the overlook blind at night waiting for hogs (which never came btw) and decided to look through the scope. It was actually brighter at 100 yards or so than I could see with the naked eye, honestly, looking through the scope, I could see things clear as day where as naked eye, everything was dark and I couldn't make out anything.

Kaitlin's rifle on the other hand NEEDS a new scope, badly. It's got a cheapo Tasco that was on it when I bought it second hand. While at the range, the sun flair (I think that's the term) was so bad neither of us could hardly see the target, and the eye relief is rediculous. She actually got scope bit from her .243, plus it's really finicky about eye position, you have to be perfect to see through it at all. I've been planning to get her a new scope for a while, but can't decide what to get her. I'm thinking Vortex for sure, but don't know what the quality levels are. I would get her a 4-12 Viper, but I don't want to spend $500 on a scope for a rifle that won't get used that much, so I was leaning more toward the Diamondback line.

My bro owns a Viper PST 6x25 and a DB 4x16...he thinks the DB clarity is really good.

Luke you know what Im gonna say.......BUY A ZIESS! Stop bieng a wennie head! And when I see Katlin im gonna tell her the same thing. Then show her Heathers rifle with the 50mm on it and thats what she is gonna want.So just do It all ready. What you dont know im gonna say is some advise my Grand Dad told me before he died. "Dont limit one to the other, Spend as much on one as the other!" Meaning if you buy a 600 rifle be willing to spend the money on some decent glass. Why have a rifle that will do wonders and never know the possibilities, cause you cant shoot 30min before sunup or the last 30 min before sun down. Most scopes are just fine for the everyday use but you make your money work for you when its not the everyday challenge. Except for managing recoil, but were not having that issue just yet! You have spent the coin on your rifle scope, what do you think she is gonna say when you put a lower end scope on her rifle and you 2 are sitting out Hog hunting together and she cant see the pigs that you do in your scope.....im just saying i dont want to be in the Blind for that conversation.cause its gonn boil down to ''You dont Love me that much Do YOu?''Ive seen the rifle and its a Beautiful gun.Niether of you are gonna be happy with short cutting and trying to get off Cheaper. You will only be spending more money down the line on another scope. And who cares if it gets used once in a while , make that once in a while a great experince bro.And that rifle/scope combo will last forever if you take care of it.So you will get your money back out of it when you pass it along to your kids after you and your girl Tie The Knot!!!!!!

I'm in the exact same boat as you are. I have a rifle that I will only use occasionally, so I hate to put a Viper on it. I am probably going to go with a Diamondback. I'll be watching this thread.

I have the Viper HD and only looked briefly thru the DB"s. I was looking for 10x42"s and liked the Viper best.

                  .

I have the DB 4+12 on my 308 and really like it. Have shot it out to 500yrds and its still crisp and clear. Think it was around 200 from arrowsmith,

While there's no doubt Zeiss is a great scope, the day's of having to buy something expensive to get good quality are about gone. Vortex has some very fine product's that compete with other manufacturer's priced way above what they are actually worth due to a fancy name. Not in all case's but saying vortex cant compete, I would take that bet!

Okay Chris, here we go....:-D...yeah, I knew you would answer up and say Zeiss, I've come to expect it from you, and I agree that they are nice scopes, no doubt. When it comes down to spending the same amount on the glass as I did the rifle, then I'm at 250 on the rifle + 100 on the stock, so 350, close, but not the 400 the cheapest zeiss will run me.

As far as me spending the coin on MY scope, I didn't. I got real lucky and broke my old Vortex (the first generation crossfire, which was the cheapest scope line they had at the time, kinda like a leupold rifleman or Bushnell Banner). When I sent it back, I asked to upgrade and they made me a SWEET deal on the Viper, I've got less than $300 in a $550 scope.

I know you're a scope snob, and I'm becoming one as well, but I'm not loyal to any one brand, just the brand that gives me the best value for my dollar and from what I've seen, Vortex has that nailed down right now for me. I obvisoulsy haven't tried them all, but from what I've seen and read from others, the Vortex lines compete well will scopes at the same or higher price point. For example, a $400 Vortex will compete very well with a $400+ Ziess. Zeiss makes a nice scope, so does Meopta, Minox and a few others, but I think about 25% of the prices are based on name recognition.....Ohhhh, Zeiss makes the Diavari, that must be a GREAT scope, I'll pay more for it. That's true, Leupold makes the VX-7, great scope, but they also make the Rifleman, not so great scope, but because it says Leupold on it, millions of people will buy them at Academy's and Walmarts around the world, assuming they are great because they have that name on them. I actually was pretty impressed with the Bushnell Elite you put on Corbin's rifle, how did it look in the early hours of the morning to you?

I have a Diamond Back on Kelly's rifle that she used at Thompson Temple. I'm very impressed with it. Good quality light well before daylight and after. For the $$ it is pretty darn good. Very equal to my Leupold VXII on my gun. You will be very happy with it.

Yep, he's on crack,,,and better hope his scope don't crack UNLESS he's got a Vortex!

The Diamondback will do her just fine and it's warranty is second to none. It will not be as bright in extreme low light but will get her well past legal shooting hours. Take that to the bank, with the money you will save.

Are you saying that the Viper glass is so much better that the diamondback doesn't even compare to it? Maybe I'll see what I can get a Viper for.
