    Trapping questions

    Dog proof traps:
Are y’all mostly anchoring them to a tree, t post, feeder leg or using earth anchors?

I read about making 6’ cables. Is it that long so it wrap around a tree or do you need a long anchor for coons?

    Leg hold traps:
What Bobcat lure have you used that works well?

For my new MB 550 do I need to adjust the pan tension for coyote and cats or is it good to go from the factory?

For dog proofs I usually just wire them to the feeder leg haven’t lost one yet

For the dog proof I just use wire or a light chain to a t post or feeder leg and have never had an issue with anything pulling away.

Best bobcat lure IMO, is bobcat pee. You can get it at any trapper’s supply. Spray it on a little cedar twig at the backside of your trap and stick up sticks in a V shape with the point toward the pee twig. The sticks direct them toward the trap. They will back up to pee on the twig and get caught by a hind leg most times. You can hang a feather or even a piece of white surveyor’s tape a few feet off the ground near your trap. The tape gets their attention and the pee seals the deal. Cats can’t smell anywhere close to canines, and they hunt mostly with their eyes. Good luck !

I use 18" cable on a small earth anchor with a quick link to connect trap and anchor
A 6' cable and a coon here would be wrapped up in everything

Longer chain on DP lessens pullouts in my opinion
i tie to a tree or fence post.
I don’t want them too near my feeders.

I use quick links to attach chains to traps and to a post or tree.

This is what I use for the Duke's cuff traps I have... Caught literally hundreds of coons and the only trap I have ever lost is one that I had wired to a feeder leg... Use these exclusively now with quick links to attach the trap chain to the wire loop.

For our DP's we use a flat stake swivel and a washer top stake. I can put them where ever i want and way quicker than tying it to something. Removal is quick as well.

Your MB pan tension is good to go out of the box

I am surprised to hear that,my MB 550 where all to heavy when new.I use a Sullivan's trap tester and set all my traps 2-3 pounds.I have 36 MB 550 and all of them needed adjustments for the poundage and pan level.

Most of mine were too. They say ready to go and will work just fine out of the box but I usually set mine to a uniform tension.
