I have spent about 40 days in Kansas this year. With my mom passing away, I wanted to spend alot of alone time sitting in the woods and spending time with her in my mind. I am fortunate to have an outstanding lease in Kansas. So it made it easy to disappear.
Throughout the season, i have passed several 150 class deer and even 1 I think would crack 160 with a drop. His age was wrong or so I thought anyway. Did not know him so He could have been post mature. About 3 weeks after passing him at 15 yards I decided to go look at him again. I was blessed to see him again but unfortuantely he had busted off his drop so I never even picked up my bow.
During that time I was running 10 different trail cameras at creek crossings and fence crossing , hand feed location etc. At one of the spots back in Oct I got a Middle of the night picture of a clean 12 point. Could not tell much about him other than he looked pretty dang good.
Fast forward to my trip back to ranch day after Thanksgiving. Hunted that area and never laid eyes on him in daylight or nighttime trail cams. So figure he was a random pass through deer.
I came home to see my youngest son get his Aggie ring on 11/30. The next day I turned around a d came back for 8 days. Never laid eyes on him but passed several 140/150 deer. But the hunting was wearing on me and I needed to get back and handle some Krivoman Outdoors stuff. On my way home I crossed Into Oklahoma around 9am. I stopped to get gas and made the mistake and checked my cell cams. There he was, bigger than day in front of my text cam on the hand feed from the previous day. I was not even 1 hr from from the ranch. It made me laugh out loud and shook my head. Figured my Mom was just playing games with me.
I was home for a couple weeks to do christmas with the family but me and my Oldest son headed back up hear day after Christmas. When I got here I put out feed at this location which is just an open area In a wooded creek bottom near a fence crossing. The wind was not correct to hunt it but would be the next day. I went and hunted a Krivoblind on another section of the ranch. While sitting there I am watching the text cams. That's when he messed up. He showed up on my feed with a few other bucks. He stayed for over an Hour until a giant 8 pushed him off. Then when the 8 left he was back. I knew he would repeat this process the following day. They are hungry and feed is key in Late Dec.
the wind was perfect when I slipped into my homemade ground blind consisting of an old pallet and some 30 year old cattle pens. I was not expecting any visitors until 4:30 ish, but at 3:30 I see a deer 100 yards away in a creekbottom. Very thick woods, but with all the leaves one the ground it made it easier to see deep Into the trees. He was in no hurry to come in. He was very skittish. Not sure if he saw me walking in or adjusting my ozonics but he was on full alert. My wind was perfect and no way for him to smell me so not sure what was happening. All I know is it took 20 plus minutes to cover 100 yards. I was hidden behind the pallet and could not see him at all when he was eating my hand feed. I was just watching him on my LCD screen. He was eating strait on and eyeballs up. I have played this game before with bucks so no chance was I even gonna move out from behind the pallet until he gets Into a killable position. That took forever. Then he did what most do, he turned and started to walk away. I start my draw and he stops and looks back at my area over his butt. Mind you I am about 3/4 of the way drawn. Then he turned away and started moving again. I come to full draw and the bow makes a clunk when I hit the draw back wall. He is on full alert as this moment. He still can not see me due to the pallet. At this point he turns and heads away at an angle. He gets out to about 30-32 yards and I made a click sound to stop him. He did not hear the first time so I made it louder. He stopped. I held my 30 yard pin low lung and squeeze. I thought I miss judged the range because I spined him. After this point I went into kill him as fast as possible. So I grab and error and run out there and shoot him at 20 yards perfect in heart. To my surprise he is still trying to leave on His front legs. So I put a 3rd arrow in him at about 10 feet. Hated it but hated him struggling more.
After I told my son I must have made a horrible shot, we watch the video. Since he was on high alert his dumped big time at the shot. I never noticed it in real time but video don't lie.
Sorry for being long winded but it was a good story until the 3 arrows part.
Here are a couple trail cam pics as well as an LDP. Since the video is pretty graphic I will prob not post it.
Happy new year to all..
