Spring Break - mountains - ideas

The wife and kids want to take a road trip to see some mountains on the upcoming spring break (week of March 10). I, too, have never been west of Lubbock. I would like to surprise them with the idea of being able to ski/snowboard, if possible. It would be myself, wife, 15 year old boy, 12 year old tom boy of a daughter, and a 2 year old. Anywhere yall can think of that wouldn't break the bank but possibly ski and see some good views?

If you don't want to break the bank and drive... I would aim for Red River or Angel Fire in New Mexico. Avoid Taos as it is not for beginners.

I drove my family to Pagosa Spring and Durango for Spring Break three years ago. It was an awesome trip! We did Wolf Creek Ski area for half the trip, swam in the springs in the evening soothing the soreness from skiing, and Durango the second half of the trip. In Durango we did the steam train to Silverton and did back country snowmobiling.
You could also drive the Million Dollar Hwy while you're up there.

We did this as well. Kids loved the variety. I'll add that we made the day trip to Mesa Verde.

We like Angel Fire, but Rocky Mountain YMCA in Granby, CO was great for the kids’ first trip. It’s close to Granby Ranch which is a good beginner mountain. Lots of free activities like snow tubing, ice skating, and big indoor pool when you stay at the Y.

This was our kids first ski trip. Nice place, good beginner slopes and not terrible on price.
Ski New Mexico at Sipapu the most affordable ski resort in New Mexico with slopeside lodging, lessons, rentals, plus a full service cafe

If you want to see big mountains go to Colorado. Keystone has good family atmosphere and kids 12 and under ski free with 2 nights lodging.

Check out Big Sky skiing (south of Bozeman), Montana. I don’t know hotel or AirBnB rates (or your budget) but you could stay in Bozeman and drive to ski daily. You could visit Yellowstone NP on the way.

If you want mountains, we have mountains.
