Late last week I came across a hunt opportunity for eight points on a low fence place down in Live Oak county outside of George West. My wife already had plans to make the drive down from Lufkin to Kyle for her nieces first birthday party. It just so happened that the ranch was only a couple hour drive from Kyle so I convinced her to let me drop them off for the party Saturday and make a run down there Saturday night. With my son's ninth birthday coming up this week I decided to surprise him with his first hunt down in the brush country.
This was going to be a quick hunt as we arrived after dark on Saturday and really needed to get it done on Sunday to get him back to school today. I have never been one to shy away from a last minute in and out adventure though!
We met the landowner Saturday night(great older couple) and they refused to let us get a hotel room. He had us stay in their spare bunk room. We went over some deer they wanted to be shot and some deer they wanted to let pass. After some visiting with them for awhile he made the call that I knew enough about deer to send us to the blind without him guiding us(some folks are just not the best judges
).
Yesterday morning we got in the blind and he corned the roads for us. Their green up is gone so the deer were heavy on the corn. We had deer in all five lanes. I bet we had eyes on close to 20 bucks and none of these lanes were over 150 yards. Easton was having a blast! We had eyes on two mature 8 point bucks. On our left lane was a wide one and back behind us was one that was tall and heavier. Easton got a good look at both of them and told me he loved the wide buck and wanted to try and take him.
After doing some musical chairs in the blind and waiting for the right angle he finally got a shot on the buck. He made a great shot (rifle) and the buck did not leave the road!
Another great memory made and we got it done early enough to make the bday party back in Kyle!
