I went back up to my Oklahoma place on Monday to top off feeders and pack up my camp for the season since my son isn’t going to make it up to hunt this year, and I decided to better justify the 500 mile drive I would try to trap some masked bandits and maybe have a last few sits in the stand. I ended up seeing more deer than I have since 2010 before the big drought, and I got to see several bucks in person that I’ve been watching on camera. One buck I wanted to see in particular was a buck I originally chose in July to be my 2024 target buck, but I replaced him in late September with a new arrival. I actually passed him on the second day of season when I was focused on killing the other buck, and I almost immediately regretted the decision. He’d still been showing up on camera fairly regular, so I thought I might have a shot at seeing him again. We crossed paths again on Wednesday morning, and he didn’t get a second pass. Evidently, age or the rut or a combination had his body worn down to the point there was no fat at all on him, but he still weighed 245 lbs. He had matching split browtines but broke off the right split about a month ago. He still ended up gross scoring 152”.
In 22 years of deer hunting in Oklahoma, this is first year I’ve killed two bucks.
