Did a little home improvment over the weekend

When we bought our house 5 years ago I never checked to see what the had put for insulation in the attic. I just knew it was bat insulated. well for the past few years with the wild weather we had been getting high electric bills in the winter. So this fall i went up in the attic and found out we had only an R19 rating so I decided it was time for an improvement. So I started pricing blown insulation at HD and Lowes. Well Friday I picked up the machine and 15 bags of the white AttiCat insulation. If you go to HD and buy 10 bags or more you can rent the Machine for free with a refundable $250 deposit. Well Saturday we got up I climbed up in the attic while Carrie fed the machine and a hour and a half later we had a R59 rating and had to take back 5 bags. It was super easy other than crawling around in the attic. We only spent around $300 I hope we see a difference in the electric bill.

You can never have enough insulation in your attic. If you don't have low e double pane windows, get em.

left them open. Next year we are putting in two turbines.

And you blew it over the ducts....... Great job. Most people dont realize that helps the duct as well and you will notice an improvement in the air temp.

It should save you about 20-30% on your e-bill. It is well worth the little money to do it.

What if your ducts are hanging? Been thinking about this too.

Install one power vent and set it at 90 degrees and you'll be surprised.

I have had experiences of r6 and even r8 newer style ducts under blown in insulation sweating a bit...not enough to see water spots on sheetrock but moist...I was told by Owens pink panther rep not to cover ducts...I know your in that hvac Buisness, what's your experances? We just always hung the ducts before insulation.

It looks like it snowed up there. You can write this off on taxes too I think. I think we might do the same just to do it. Our bill only runs $80-$90 during the winter using a gas furnace. I think it should be lower.

Instead of turbines...use a ridge vent and soffitt vents if possible.

Much better solution than powered ventilators or turbines. Ridge vent and continuous soffit vent is hundreds of times more efficient than pv or turbines.

Looks great. I need to check into this. How many square feet is your house? Wondering how much it would cost me to do.

Is there a way to make sure you dont cover the vents or is it easy to control spraying that stuff.
