    2024 deer season recap

I know deer season isn’t finished for most, but i am done for the year so i figured i would recap my season. My season started out shaky by wounding a really nice 10 point and not being able to find him. I was pretty down in the dumps about the whole situation. A week or so later a really big 8 showed up that i had seen the year prior but never got a shot at. He was coming to the feeder daily so i made a quick trip to the lease to kill him. Well the archery gods have not been smiling down on me this season and i made another bad shot. I called a dog and we tracked the deer for almost 2 miles till we called off the track saying it was not a mortal wound. Turns out we were right and he showed back up to the feeder 2 days later with a wound on his neck. Sunday morning found me back in the blind trying to finish the job. He came in right after the feeder went off but didn’t stick around as he knew something wasn’t right. At this point I decided to put the bow down and put the odds more in my favors. Sunday afternoon me and my daughter had an encounter with him late in the evening. He came down off a ridge 268 yards from us and as he was walking down we lost him in the brush for about 15 minutes. He out to the feeder that is about 150 yards out, and just as i was about to squeeze the trigger he decided he didn’t want to be there and left. Tuesday morning rolls around and as i am watching a couple deer at the feeder I catch movement to my right. The buck was working through the brush and stopped next to a cedar and we had a bit of a mexican standoff. He then turned and started making a scrape and after a few minutes he moved off and i lost him again. Finally after 15 minutes i caught movement again and watched him come back out hard quartering to me and he knew I was there. He blew and about the time he was going to bolt I let 162gr ELDX do its job. He took off running and did a front flip within 50 yards of the shot. Turns out he was with a doe and i never saw her until i shot. Walking up to the deer be actually got bigger, i don’t recall that ever happening. Turns out I killed an 8 point of a lifetime scoring 160 3/8.

My almost 12 year old son was able to kill a really nice cull buck Monday morning.
