Jeanette and I went for a quick hunt at our Blanco County lease on Tuesday before we would have to return home on Thanksgiving Day. Hannah was going to drive in from College Station on Wednesday night to join us, but would only be able to hunt Thursday morning and afternoon before we had to leave. After discussion, we decided that Jeanette and I would hunt Wednesday evening and then meet Hannah back at home in Lavaca County, where she could get in a few sits before we leave for POC on Friday afternoon.
On Wednesday afternoon,. Jeanette shot one of the free range Axis that we occasionally see on the south side of the ranch! She was excited after the shot, but doubt started creeping in. I was hunting about 1/2 mile from her, so I walked over to her. We watched the video and tracked it down into the dry creek bottom before we backed out and called Carrol Kelly and his dogs. I'll save the details for the upcoming video, but after a LONG search, the dogs finally found the deer! Jeanette was excited to finally shoot her Axis with her Mathews Jewel! I was excited to have more tasty Axis meat for the freezer!

Excitement aside, by the time we found the deer, got proper LDP's and video and finished skinning and quartering, it was 1:50 am! For obvious reasons, we decided to spend the rest of the night at the lease and head home on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, Hannah got to the house on Wednesday night, but decided not to hunt on Thursday morning. Jeanette and I packed up and were home by mid morning on Thursday. Hannah went to a Xenek ground blind I have set up over a feeder at our small property on Thursday afternoon. Just before dark, I got a text that does were coming in. "Doe season" in Lavaca county is essentially limited to 4 days from Thanksgiving until Sunday, so she had a green light to shoot. A few minutes later she sent me a text that she had "SHOT!" She waited til it was dark and then quietly slipped out of the blind and walked around the road back to the house. She was confident in the shot and it looked good from what we could tell on the video (although the video was pretty dark.) We decided to eat dinner and then we'd start the track.
Hannah and I walked back along a trail from the house to the blind. Before we arrived, Hannah spotted her arrow in the brush, along with good spots of blood. We picked up the track there, which was heading back to the house. It was a pretty quick track and then we found the doe piled up, about 100 yards from the house! We dragged her back to the house for the LDP's (and video).

Hannah made a perfect double-lung shot with her Mathews Prima. This is her second deer of the season (the first being a Blanco county buck), with both being solo hunts with self-filmed video!
Videos from both exciting hunts coming soon!
