    My dude got it done

My boys and I had a blast at the lease this weekend. My oldest, soon to be13 year old, got it done this weekend. It’s been an exceptionally slow year for us unfortunately, worst I’ve seen it out there. My dude and I saw this deer Friday morning with a doe and he gave a small opportunity but my son didn’t feel comfortable with the shot and we watched him slip into a thicket with his doe. We snuck out of there and got back in the stand early Friday evening. It was slow until about 5:20 when we spot the doe about 80 yds from where we saw them in the morning. My son wasn’t wasting anytime and I saw him getting ready and sure enough the buck appeared a couple minutes later behind her. We watched him for a minute or so and he turned enough where my son said he was taking the slight quartering shot. He let the 26 Nosler rip and a well placed shot let the accubond do the rest. Buck made it about 20 yds before expiring. We high fived, made the recovery, took some pics, and headed to camp. I told him he could skin his first animal this season and he was pumped. We helped out a little but dude did awesome! Lil bro, the little Debbie killer, supervised it all, haha!

The next evening we went to a spot that overlooks the brazos river and watched a feeder that sits about 200 yds away. A small buck was already there and we sat there and goofed off talking. We sit on the edge so we were getting comfortable when we both look up simultaneously and the lil buck is gone and a big boar had replaced him. We weren’t sure where he came from but none the less, there he was. I had setup the 300 PRC and was behind it when I look at him and ask, “you want him?!” I was kinda hoping he said, “nah go ahead dad, you never get to shoot anymore” but he just smiled and started making his way and scoots me out of the way. I start helping him get comfortable and glass the pig up again and he’s munching away. After several minutes due to the bad sun glare, he tells me he’s ready as soon as the pig turns. I’m watching through binos and he says “ you ready” I say yep and he lets it rip. The 212 grain ELD-X behind the ear was devastating! Ol boar had no clue what hit him, never took a stop and we celebrated again as he laid directly under the feeder. We were there a total of maybe 20 mins so we haul butt to our other stand but no more luck. We headed to camp, made dinner that consisted of quesadilla burgers, sausage, and some of abuelas homemade tamales heated up over the fire.

This morning lil bro almost got it done on another management deer but the stars didn’t align. Hopefully next week. We packed up before the rain and straight shooter wanted chicken fried steak so Mary’s was the choice.

    Great times with my boys!

Congrats on the buck and the chicken fried steak. A chicken fried steak that size, to a growing teenage boy, feels like a trophy.
