    Porcupines

We seem to have a large amount to porcupines on our lease this year , we see them occasionally at the feeders but mostly roaming about. My question is are they beneficial or detrimental in any ways. I do like watching them , they remind me of a spiny sloth since them move so slow.

I don't think they hurt a thing. But, when you find yourself in a 12' tripod, tucked up into an already occupied cedar tree and one starts hissing at you in the dark, they'll dang sure make you hurt yourself. Ask me how I know....

They can kill trees by ringing the bark from trunk and limbs.

Yup, they girdle beneficial hardwoods. In central TX, if I see them they die of acute lead poisoning.

I hunted a place out west with goats, the rancher said kill them all. He said they will kill the baby goats, when they get curious the porcupines will get them in the face

Every rancher i’ve ever dealt with has said to kill all porcupines. They damage trees, livestock and ranchers dogs.

Slow and don’t travel very well !

In Bandera Co during the drought they apparently killed some trees.

They have gotten a pass here so far.

Have you seen a porcupine lately? If you live in central Texas, the chances are you’ve noticed one in a tree or on the road. If you haven’t seen one yet, keep your eyes out, because the…

They are resilient. Unloaded a 17 hmr on one and finally found it dead the next day. Wasted some TSS turkey loads on one bc birdshot woundnt kill it. Shot this one the other day with a rage and it wasn't fazed, found it the next day.

Kill ‘em all, I’ve had bird dog get tangled up with one.

Choot em had many a dogs come back full of quills. Didn't know about the whole tree damage thing but that's even more of a reason.
