My 9 year old daughter Kiley finally decided she was ready to kill a deer this year.
We started hunting youth weekend, but ended up not shooting anything. Had a couple opportunities at hogs, but she didn’t shoot, because she wasn’t comfortable with them “moving to much”.
Made a second trip to the Lease this past weekend. Saturday morning, was a little chilly, but we were ready. After the feeder went off, a group of pigs came in. Again, she just couldn’t get comfortable so she didn’t pull the trigger. They ended up leaving after about 15 minutes when all the corn was gone. It was still very early, only about 7:00 am. So I walked out to the feeder and threw some more corn and ran back. Wishing a few minutes here comes 2 bucks. One of which was a shooter 9 point. Within 2 minutes of his feeding (facing us, no shot opportunities) a couple does come in, and of course he starts chasing 1. The deer are moving all over the place, but she is staying patient. She asks me if she could shoot one of the does, I said yes, let’s shoot the biggest one.
I was watching the deer, got her set up and ready on the gun, and told her to wait for a broadside shot. I pull up my binos again for another look and BOOM! She shot! The doe dropped dead in her tracks. Admittedly, I wasn’t 100% ready for the ****, but she was.
You can see the deer dead in the first picture. 135 yards across the pond.
she did a great job and was super excited. She is now looking for that buck next trip!
It’s going to be tough for me to get time behind the gun this year with her and her big brother hunting this year.
