What a weekend! Yesterday afternoon we went in as soon as rain let up @ 4:00. We snuck into the woods down a trail that keeps us completely hidden from all the lanes. We are less than 40 yards from the ladder when Butter bean exploded from the brush 15 yards from us! And tore out like a rocket. I tried to stay positive for him but honestly felt like the odds of him staying in the area were slim… although we had the wind in our favor.
of course he didn’t show yesterday evening and I had to accidentally (cough) spook a pig just before Tucker couldn’t decide he just had to shoot it. lol. As we pack up to leave 2 “deer” it was so dark then I couldn’t tell you what they were other that deer came out and camped for 15 minutes. But since I set the blind up for entry and exit we made it out without spooking them and got back to the truck for a fish fry like no other compliments of my kiddos!!
Lola was scheduled to go, but Bee Bop talked her into swapping, didn’t take much since she was exhausted and wanted to sleep in and he was fired up about a show down with a buck I figured was 3 counties away by now

Time change gives everyone an extra hour… unless you hunt. lol. But tired as he was he crawled outta bed and got dressed and to the stand we went. We got settled in about 5:45 and within 10 minutes he wanted to lay down. Another 5 minutes and I can see a blob as far down the lane as I can see and stay glued in the binoculars. A little later another blob crosses.
We’re still 10-15 before shooting light (for an adult even) and I can make out the one dead center of lane is a doe….. but the one blocking her …. Ain’t! I just couldn’t be 100% on who he was yet. He knew he wasn’t supposed to be in the open, so he just stayed in the edges. If she moved, he would push her back and stand guard. I honestly thought he was going to mount one time.
….. now here come 2 more blobs down the lane. Younger bucks that locked up like a bird dog on a covey when they got to within 50 yards of the champion! As he walked and postures them into the brush he exited the lane to our right and was out of sight…. But doe was still there. So I knew he wasn’t far!Last edited by Low Fence; 11-03-2024, 04:21 PM.

Doe finally walks to the left not 2 steps and here he comes again and now I’ve got enough light to immediately identify and tell bee bop safety is off !!! But he pushed doe into woods too quickly. I’ve scouted those woods and there’s a massive ditch /cliff in there with water and I don’t feel she’s gonna choose that option.
we get a game plan on what I think will play out and say a prayer…. And the Lord answered! I see her head now coming right for us! I told him safety is off and get ready he will be coming!!!
at 60 yards it looked like a small horse and presented the perfect shot! I tell him there’s the shot if you have it!….. there’s a tree dad! I can’t see him……
he takes 3 steps and Bop says I got him now! As soon as I acquired him in the binos BOOM!!!!!!!! I mighty left hook from the challenger send 120gr of federal fusion headed south!!!!
I was in complete shock, I had no idea what happened! He said “I smoked em!”…. I hugged him and his chest felt like he had a timber rattler in his shirt. I thought I was going to be sick…. And I wasn’t even shooting.
I said let’s give him 20 minutes to be safe and he talked me through the shot and I actually felt better about it after hearing an 8yo explain it to me… said another prayer for ability and wisdom which to were answered as I would soon be shown.

…. Thunder rolls and rain starts to fall
my 20 minute frame was at 15 and I felt I needed to get on the ball so on the track we go. Easily find the tracks and mud where he was shot at…. Enter the soaking wet pine needles in extremely poor light and realize this is a level of difficulty I’m not use to. But slowly, inch by inch I find a drop!…. He’s hit! Another 3 yards a pretty big clump with bones and important stuff in it!…. He’s hit good enough!!! Then nothing…….
it’s so thick I still don’t know how he ran in there, but I pick the 2 most probable lines and told him stand right here!
1. I walked about 20 yards and nada
2. I decided if I don’t find buck or traceable blood in 50 I will call a dog
at about 20 yards in I see a faint white stripe tangled in the brush!!!
Butter Bean is down!!!!! Beep Bop is the new champion of that particular patch of woods!Last edited by Low Fence; 11-03-2024, 04:25 PM.
