I retired a few months ango and had several bucket list trips planned with my dad who was my favorite hunting and fishing buddy. Unfortunately we lost him in June before we could make any of those trips so when I saw the Meateater trip I figured it would be a fun solo trip and I know he was watching over me.
The trip was 4 nights with 3 days fishing (2 days inshore and one day offshore) however the weather didn’t cooperate so we did all 3 days inshore. I was paired up with Riley a guy from Minnesota and he was a good dude and fun to fish with.
Day one I fished with Riley and Nate (mgr of customer service and organized the trip). Fishing was slow but he was a blast to fish with and super knowledgeable about all things involving Western hunting so I picked his brain on some hunts to put in for.
Day 2 I fished with Riley and Mark Kenyon of Wired to Hunt. We caught a ton of trout and Mark being a diehard WT deer hunter gave me some pointers on hunting Iowa which I hope to do next year.
Day 3 I fished with Riley and Chili (I forget exactly what he does but something like equipment organizer and I think camera stuff as well). Chili spent 8 years in the Marines and is a die hard Western hunter so he also shared some k owledge on hunts to apply for. We slayed the trout again and had a great time.
We stayed at Cypress Cove lodge in Venice and they fed us some incredible food over the 4 days! The evenings were spent just hanging out and all the guys were very engaged. Steve was awesome to visit with and genuinely seemed to enjoy every minute of it. I told him about my upcoming Nilgai hunt at LANWR and he was pumped to talk about his Nilgai hunt.. Janis was hilarious and told some great stories. Cal was exactly what you would expect and just a blast to talk to-we talked about bird dogs and bird hunting. Clay Newcomb and Brent Reeves arrived the night before we left and also spent a lot of time visiting with everyone however I didn’t really get a chance to visit with them.
