    What is Hallowed

    What Is Hallowed?

Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
    Matthew 6:10

Last year this answer appeared in the $200 box on the television program Jeopardy: “Our Father which art in heaven, ________ be thy name.” The three contestants looked perplexed as the buzzer sounded. The host supplied the question: “What is hallowed?” How tragic that people no longer know the Lord’s Prayer!

Every phrase of that famous prayer is meaningful. For example, when we pray, “Your kingdom come,” we are really praying for the Millennial reign of Christ. The Lord’s Kingdom is “already but not yet.” When He came the first time, Jesus established the Kingdom of His Church. Christ-followers are the vanguard of His Kingdom. We are already here, serving Him now. But the ultimate fulfillment is yet to come. When He comes again, He will establish an earthly, physical, geographical, political Kingdom. He will reign over the earth from His throne in Jerusalem.

Every time we pray, “Your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven,” we are looking forward to God’s glorious thousand-year-long answer! It’s still important to know—and to pray!—the Lord’s Prayer.

When you pray “Thy kingdom come,” you are asking for the second coming of Jesus to this earth.

The church is the new Jerusalem and Jesus reigns from there now. The church, which is the body of Christ, is the temple rebuilt. There will be no other temple rebuilt. "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up again."

That's an interesting observation. I'm gonna study up on that. I always thought of it as just referring to His own crucifixion and resurrection. Could it also include His church as His body? Our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and we, collectively, are the body of Christ....Hmmm? This aligns with the mindset I've always had when I prayed the Lords prayer.

I've always prayed the Lords prayer with the idea that I was asking for His Will, as it is in heaven, to be done now, throughout the whole earth, in every way. Not necessarily for the second coming of Christ, but for the will of man and the church, to align with the Will of God and for His Kingdom to be manifest thru us, here on earth now, so that none should perish, as is His Will. For if we simply pray for the coming of Christ without regard to His Will first being done on earth, I feel we would be praying for our own salvation, and not the salvation of others. I look forward to Christ's return, but not before His mission for us is complete. I fear I would not be able to look on my Lords face, knowing I left someone else to perish because my heart was not set upon their salvation. Because He is the Lord, I understand His Will will be done regardless. But as to the position of my heart, I believe I should not want to rush the coming of Christ for my own sake, but instead be patient, if only for the sake of others to know Him as well. Seeing the face of Jesus is my greatest anticipation, but I pray that all who will know Him, will know Him at His coming, even if it means I'm delayed in seeing Him. Praying in this way, I believe, will actually accelerate His coming. It's "Kingdom first" praying and puts the Kingdom ahead of our own selves which should produce Kingdom results in others. So for me, "Thy Kingdom come", means NOW, and "come Jesus come", means when ALL are ready!

Your instincts are on target, I judge. I like your concern for the salvation of others in your prayers for the kingdom.
Jesus was claiming to be the new temple. And the church is the continuation of his body. In 1 Cor 12, Paul says WE are Christ. "...so too is Christ (one body)." He was talking about the church. And then he goes on to talk about how we are his one body. Earlier, Paul explicitly calls the church the temple of God. (I Cor 3)
Now this is big: Notice how in the book of Acts Luke shows the people of God going up against various temples. First it's the Jewish temple followed by the temples of Zeus and Diana (double check me on those and there might be one more; can't remember as I type). Luke is presenting the Church AS THE NEW TEMPLE going up against the other temples. That is what he is doing. Luke, though just a physician, was a shrewd theologian.
The point of the tabernacle in the wilderness was "God with us". Everywhere the people went and everything the people experienced God went and experienced. THAT WAS THE POINT. The temple took the place of the tabernacle and was intended to represent the presence of God with the people. These were a shadow of the Christ to come. The tabernacle and the physical temple were light. But Jesus is the TRUE light; the full revelation of God's intention to live with us as one of us everlastingly. Now that Jesus has come and is the full revelation of God with us, THERE IS NO NEED FOR A PHYSICAL TEMPLE. Nor will there ever be. And Jesus continues to live with us and the World through his body, the church. "Saul, Saul! Why are you persecuting ME?!"

Thank you for the interest. God bless you in your pursuit of him.
