    Draw Weight & Age

After a couple of years of fighting shoulder issues, I finally dropped my draw weight from 70lbs to 60lbs. I went to Outlaw Archery this morning to pick up some new arrows and had Raymond back it off while I was there. I won't get a chance to shoot it and get my sights adjusted until tomorrow but I'm sure it'll feel better. I had two injections in my shoulder in April and May trying to avoid surgery for a while so I figured it was time. How many of you guys have backed off your poundage as you got a little older?

On a side note... that was my first time at Outlaw Archery and it was great.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve had my bow at 70 lbs as long as I can remember. I’ve had both shoulders operated on the last few years. I am also on my 3rd bout with cancer this year alone. I had to drop it down to about 60 lbs. I’m not exactly sure what poundage I’m shooting because I lowered it myself. I’m just happy to be able to still draw a bow back at least one more season.

I was curios how this range/shop was, as its a little closer to my house than Texas Archery but I always had good experiences at Texas Archery every time I went in there.

I'm the same way. I've been shooting 70lbs since I got into archery and have been stubborn about backing off. Like you, I'm just glad I can still shoot a compound.

If you liked Texas Archery, you'll love Outlaw Archery. Richard and Raymond are both at Outlaw now. You ought to check it out.

Been at 60 since I started and I'm young. I keep shots under 30 with a good arrow and have had no issues. Makes practice much more enjoyable as well.

Been at 73 lbs since I was in high school and I’m almost 50 now. I’m sure my time is coming for a decrease in draw weight, but not in the near future. With advancements in technology, today’s 60 lbs bows shoot faster than 70 lb bows from 10-15!years ago

So true. Most modern bows at 60 are faster than the old "speed bows" at 70 from 10-15 years ago. I'm not worried about speed or energy as I know it won't be an issue. I'm using a good cut on contact broadhead. I didn't have a problem with 70lbs in hunting situations or with just a few draws, but long practice sessions really aggravate my shoulder.

I was a 70 lb. shooter for years. Now at almost 66 years old I’m pulling 55 lbs with a 2 year old Mathews V3X and don’t feel like I’ve lost any speed at all. Let the bow do the work as age or health become an issue.

What broadheads have you been shooting Terry?

When I switched back to compound a few years ago I set it at 55#. When I decided to get a newer bow I went up in draw weight to 60#, and that’s where I am currently. I’m 63.

I shot one of my 498gr FMJ’s plum thru a 1600+# eland last summer in S Africa, and that one shot told
me I had all I need!!!!!!

Just did this a few weeks ago 70lb to 62lb. I couldn't believe the difference in just 8 lbs. wish I would have done it long ago. I have 2 bone spurs in my shoulder and after practicing now there is no soreness.

Before I stopped shooting a vertical bow I was at 58 lb. on an Elite Synergy. It still killed everything I needed to kill. Much easier on an old fart !
