Son in law looking at a 2016 Tahoe. Are there any outstanding problems with that vehicle ? About 80K on the odometer, 5.3 engine I think he said. Any reason not to buy other than it’s a &#*#@$& Chevy ?
It has a 6l80 transmission and 5.3 with AFM. Every vehicle brand has problems so it's a crapshoot to get a good one. If he can get it at a decent price, looks well maintained and can afford repairs then why not. Just understand that people don't hold onto trouble vehicles.
The folks above covered all of the main common problems. If the price is right, and if you are mechanically inclined or are really good friends with a mechanic then all mechanical problems can be overcome….. for the right price. AFM problems can be cured with cam and lifter replacements before issues arise, or an AFM eliminator. Transmissions can always be rebuilt with better components.
Thanks for all the replies. I suspected transmission as the big item, and the son in law already knows this but has had some Chevys before and the unit is priced to move so I think they are going to get it anyway. If I ever buy another one, y’all feel free to pee on my grave. I expect to stay dry.
Strange, my sis just got rid of hers a couple of weeks ago. There's a mod for the trans to help reduce the chance of failure. Trans thermostat runs the temp up to hot (190) causing problems. By installing a lower temp stat, or doing a stat delete, helps ensure trans fluid temps run cooler and reduces wear on partz.
Here's a little info on mods to help the trans last longer. There's a lot more info on the webs with a little digging.
The 6l80e is a great transmission, but certainly has its flaws. One of which is the built in thermostat. Learn how to bypass the 6l80e thermostat and lower trans temps.

I call it a crap fix. I have the 6l90 in my 2500 that crapped out at 78k and it doesn't even have the thermostat. It's a torque converter problem. I left my information center on Trans temp and it never got hot until it did.
You really shouldn’t have to work on a car after it comes from the factory with a big $ tag on it. That should start happening after 150k or so. I know it’s kinda the norm nowadays for stuff not to last but it irritates the hell out of me. That’s why I stay with Ford, they have been more trouble free than any GM product. I don’t know about Dodges, never could summon the courage to try one.

Like I said it’s a crapshoot. My luck with Fords is nonexistent.

Unfortunately, every manufacturer has gotten to the planned obsolescence company plan. Vehicles are designed to make it to the end of the factory warranty, and after that it really is a crap shoot. Even brands that have a long history of being known as being reliable, like Toyota, are not as good as they once were. It really is a shame with what vehicles are selling for.
