    Sandbur patch --> Buffalograss

    Anyone pulled off this conversion? I'm thinking Roundup this summer/fall, another round of Roundup in the spring, then broadcast and cultipack buffalograss seed by late April or so.

    Pull weeds/sandbur as needed. Water is easily available. Central TX. Sandy loam.

    Thanks.

    If you can find it, MSMA will take care of the stickers.

        I used a pre-emergent to keep the burrs already on the ground from sprouting, and trust me, there are lots of them. Just killing the sprouted plants isn't the answer. --takes a couple of applications about 3 months apart to get started, and MSMA will surely kill the plants. If you don't use the preemergent you'll be continually spraying the burrs.

          This is definitely the case, killing the plants that are there will only make room for the the little B***ards in the ground! I believe best time to treat is in Feb and then every 2.5 to 3 months after with pre-emergent as noted. Getting the rest of the grass healthy is what it needs over time, but will definitely not be an easy fix and will take consistent applications over years!!! They suck!!!

            Just echoing preemergent is the most important part of this. And its not a one year deal. you better plan on it for the next 10. You will find you wont get them all. Spot spray with MSMA etc early to catch them before the burs harden helps with them rotting.

            If small areas you can drag carpet to collect some burs then burn. Its a process to say the least.

              Rezilon pre emergent and most effective post emergent is celsius.

                Rezilon is good but you wont be able to use it or Atrazine etc premergent until he gets his seed germinated. Then you can hit it with preemergent OP just keep this in mind.

                  I did the same thing a few years ago. My yard was basically a pasture with only weeds and grassburrs. I nuked the whole yard with Roundup. Tilled and packed it all then planted Buffalo grass. It doesn't tolerate shade but does great in full sun areas.

                  I'm no expert but I don't think you want to use pre-emergent for 6-8 months if you are going to plant new grass seed. The pre-emergent doesn't discriminate between germinating grass seed or weed seed so your grass seed may not grow if you have per-emergent down.

                  Once the buffalo grass was up and growing well I hand picked any weeds that were growing. I went back to using pre-emergent and spraying weeds the next season. The Rezilon mentioned above worked pretty well when used twice a season. I used it at the beginning of march and again in July.

                  It looks pretty awesome now.

                    MSMA will kill everything but Bermuda. Don't use on buffalo grass.

                      This was my thought as well. Pre-emergent doesn't care if it's buffalograss or sandbur seed. Now sod, that's a different story.

                        Correct--if you are planting seed, no pre-emergent.
