    Porcupines

Everyone else seeing porcupines consistently at their feeders

One was enough now I have three here in Brown County.

Any protein dropped by deer is claimed and the deer have to feed around them at corn feeders

Rascals finished my trophy rock in just a few nights!

I don’t see them at my feeders but they tear my pinion pines up if I don’t get dog wire around the trunk.

      I wish they loved Mesquite!
Saw one last week. Are they all that uncoordinated walking on the ground ?

My mom had a dog get into one a week ago. My buddy had a cow get quills in her face last Friday and I seen a porcupine dead on the highway yesterday. They must've had a good year. Seems like there's a lot of 'em roaming around.

They move pretty slow. They can run but it sure ain't a fast run. Ran up on several and smoked them in the head with a rock. They ain't very hard to take down. They stand up and keep their back to you when they're on the ground. A rock to the back of the dome will kill them dead as a hammer.

I know a lot of people like them because they're cute and all that. But they're sure rough on other animals. A dog with a mouth and nose full of quills ain't too cute.

I’ve heard that porcupines and beavers are expanded their range.

See one occasionally, lease owner wants us to kill them because they girdle some types of trees. I'd be raising them to release if they'd eat cedar.

Our Blue Lacy got into one last year at camp. My brother shot one and brought it back to camp a couple weeks later and she wouldn’t even go near the buggy he had it in. I’m not one to kill an animal unnecessarily, but I’m really not sure what environmental benefit porcupine have.

I shoot them on sight. They love to chew plywood(box blinds and sheds) and are a great hazard to dogs. Very destructive critters. Click image for larger version

What do they do to damage a pine tree? Chew through the trunk? Go for the roots? Or are they climbers who wreak havoc from the top down?

Like someone else said, I’m not sure what kind benefit they are to the environment—or the natural food chain, for that matter—but they sure cause a lot of trouble for pets and livestock. For this reason, I’d sooner see them dead.

Some dogs get into a porcupine and develop a hate for them. My cousins had a Red Heeler that would come up to the house full of quills. He'd sit down and let you pull every one of those things out. He'd let out a whimper or yelp every now and then but for the most part he just sat and let it happen. A few days later you'd have to do it all again. He'd have them in his mouth, neck, chest and of course his face. That was either the toughest or dumbest dang dog I ever met in my lifetime. I'm sure he was killin them. If not they were bald by the time he was done jackin around with them.

Even though it was self inflicted I felt bad for that son of a gun every time. He just couldn't let them be. You know that's gotta hurt like hell.

They gnaw around the bottom of the trunk tearing bark off and seem to climb a little too. It will kill the trees if bad enough which it usually is. Seems they like the young ones best. Problem is the Elk and Red Stag like to hook in the same trees late Sept-mid November but I can’t slow that down. Probably the reason these pines are scarce.

I never knew they were anywhere close to these parts until a my brother-n-law turned me onto a couple out in Coleman several years back.
