There was a teenage girl in my certification class. Her dad was always with us, I assume he didn't want to leave her alone due to her age. I didn't realize he was a diver until someone asked about throwing up under water and he mentioned he'd done it numerous times. Turns out he was Easter European and was a recovery diver back home. Said most of his body recoveries were in 6"-1' visibility. He said if you can dive in that, you can dive in anything.

Agreed but far from ideal learning conditions which is why underwater nav, night diving, and recovery diving are additional certifications/"specialties" not covered in general OW certification, or only briefly touched on. Too much info too soon. Like taking an intro pilot straight to spin recovery training. "P-A-R-E!"

Got certified back in 1977, so I know things have changed a lot. Went through a shop in Dallas and did open water in Canyon Lake. Joined the Texins Dive Club at T.I. and went on to get certified on up to Assistant Instructor. Had to give it up when I blew out an inner ear in Florida. I've made blue water dives in Cozumel, Roatan and the Galapagos Islands and they were nice, but I enjoyed the lakes better. For some stupid reason it was more fun NOT being able to see. Did some light salvage work and several search and recovery in the N. Texas area. It is the one hobby I miss the most. Whatever you do OP......... have fun!

We did sea sports scuba in Houston. Used to be big time with 4 shops, but all are closed now.

id do local and then when you get to a destination for real diving (Cozumel) you can do a quick refresh if feeling uncomfortable.

I actually have some fins and bag and stuff I’m willing to sell if you need gear. I’m in NW Houston PM if interested.

I got certified about 10 years ago and did all the classroom stuff online and then 1 day of pool work and 1 day of boat diving in Playa Del Carmen. It is very addictive and I have over 300 dives in Cozumel and now that I am retired planning on venturing out to some new spots.

depending on where you're going most of the time you're going to be able to get certified on the dives while you're there. Yes, getting it done early gets you more comfort but you won't have enough time to get dives in to get to the next level and go deeper by then imo. I'm in Coppell and have some gear you can borrow to try it out, I'd just have to go to storage to see if I can find my bc and reg but I know my fins, botties and weights are in the garage. I have a 3/2 wetsuit if you fit into a M (I don't anymore). I worked at a dive shop in Hawaii for 12 years running their freedive program and taught scuba at SFA. The dive shop in Nac is great btw
