I've got a 2240 square foot house. What's the going rate for adding about 6" of blown in insulation in my home? Is it pretty simple to do? Things to avoid getting insulation on or near other than my soffit vents? ?

My recent bid was around $2200 for 8” for a 3500 SF house but it’s a two story.Last edited by IowaHunter; 08-12-2024, 04:42 PM.

Probably around 1.25-1.50 per sq foot installed, but its super easy to DIY if you have 2 people and don't mind walking in the attic. Go to Home Depot and get the Owens corning Attic Cat loose fill insulation and they will rent the machine for free. Probably a few hundred bucks if you do it that way. Don't insulate over your soffits and if you have metal-can type recessed lights they make covers that go over them.
As an AC guy I've been in thousands of attics without stepping through. The only ceiling I've ever put my foot through was doing this exact project on my sister's house.

If you choose to DIY, be sure to buy a good respirator. I agree on be careful around metal-can recessed light types of fixtures. In our previous house, the recessed lighting in the master bath would flip the breaker from time to time. It turned out that the metal box in the attic had blown in insulation completely covering it up and it was overheating.
